BREAKING: Atiku’s Camp Speaks on Running with Okonjo-Iweala, ‘She’s One of the Best’

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential hopeful, Atiku Abubakar, has not selected a running mate for the 2027 presidential election, contrary to speculations linking him with World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

A source within Atiku’s political camp disclosed that no official decision has been taken regarding a vice-presidential candidate, stressing that discussions about potential running mates remain premature.

According to the source, while Okonjo-Iweala is widely respected both locally and internationally and possesses qualities that many politicians would value in a running mate, she is not currently being considered as Atiku’s likely choice.

“Atiku has not announced any running mate, and there is no official process underway that has produced a vice-presidential candidate at this stage,” the source said.

The source added that although Okonjo-Iweala remains one of Nigeria’s most accomplished public figures, with a distinguished record in economic management and global leadership, reports suggesting she has been penciled down for the position are inaccurate.

“Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is undoubtedly one of the best personalities any politician would be proud to work with. Her experience, competence and international standing are beyond question. However, she is not likely to emerge as Atiku’s running mate based on current realities,” the source stated.

Speculation over Atiku’s possible running mate has intensified in recent weeks amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, insiders maintain that the former vice president is presently focused on consultations and coalition-building efforts, with decisions on a running mate expected to come much later in the electoral process.

Neither Atiku nor his official campaign structure has issued any statement indicating that a vice-presidential candidate has been chosen.
