ADC Releases Fresh Request Before INEC, Set to Release Timetable

Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is reportedly weighing the option of selecting a prominent political figure from Nigeria’s Southern region as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to political sources familiar with ongoing coalition discussions, the individual being considered is a former ally of President Bola Tinubu, a move that could reshape political alignments and strengthen opposition efforts ahead of the next presidential contest.

The reported consideration comes amid intensified consultations among opposition leaders seeking to build a broad-based coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Analysts say a Southern running mate could help Atiku consolidate support in a region that remains strategically important in national elections.

While neither Atiku’s camp nor representatives of the alleged vice-presidential prospect have officially confirmed the reports, political observers believe the move would signal a deliberate effort to attract influential political blocs beyond the PDP’s traditional support base.

The South South is also a possibility for the ADC aspirant where a strong candidate can actually divided the incumbent votes. States like Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, and Rivers states, has long played a significant role in determining electoral outcomes due to its voting strength and economic importance.

Political analysts note that choosing a former Tinubu ally could also underscore the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political landscape, where alliances frequently shift ahead of major elections.

As of the time of filing this report, no official announcement had been made regarding Atiku’s running mate selection.
