2027: Labour Party Adds More Pressure On Peter Obi, Issues Warning

The Labour Party has announced that no candidate will automatically receive a ticket for the 2027 elections, including former presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The party emphasizes that all positions—be it presidential, governorship, or other elective roles—will be contested through established primaries.
This decision comes amid increasing speculation about Obi’s potential political moves and his silence on whether he plans to return to the party before the 2027 elections.
Obiora Ifoh, the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, clarified that the party intends to strictly adhere to its internal democratic processes. He stated that only the national convention has the authority to determine the candidates who will represent the party in the elections.
Ifoh also emphasized that the party will maintain its procedures and will not make exceptions for anyone, regardless of their popularity or past contributions. Additionally, the National Executive Committee (NEC) has established a clear stance that every aspirant must emerge through a transparent and competitive selection process.
Regarding Obi’s current situation, Ifoh mentioned that the former Anambra governor has distanced himself from the party leadership for nearly a year. He stated that only Obi can clarify his political stance, adding that the party will not speak on his behalf.
Ifoh also revealed that the party did not discuss Obi’s situation during its recent NEC meeting because the agenda was focused on launching congresses and primaries nationwide. He described the congresses that have been held so far as successful, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) monitored the exercises and confirmed compliance with electoral guidelines.
