Don’t Insult Nigerians, Resign” ADC Says to Chairman

According to The Daily Post, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has publicly called for the resignation of Professor Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), citing allegations of partisanship. In an official statement issued by spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi, the party expressed concerns over a 2023 social media post that appears to support Bola Ahmed Tinubu and is reportedly linked to the INEC chairman. The ADC claims that this situation raises serious questions about the credibility and neutrality of the electoral body.
The party further alleged that there have been attempts to manipulate digital records to hide past political affiliations, which they view as a significant threat to transparency and accountability. The ADC emphasized that an electoral commission should not only be independent but also perceived as impartial at all times. They argued that the chairman’s actions and behavior do not meet the standards necessary for someone responsible for overseeing elections in a democratic context.
In their statement, the ADC insisted that Professor Amupitan must resign immediately, warning that failing to do so would undermine public trust and set a dangerous precedent for Nigerian democracy. Additionally, the party announced plans to elevate its response by updating petitions to various institutions, including foreign governments and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). The ADC also indicated that it would engage in civil disobedience actions until the INEC chairman steps down from office.
