Gamal Nkrumah, Son Of Ghana’s First President Kwame Nkrumah, Dies At 68 In Egypt

Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, son of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, has died at the age of 68 in Cairo, Egypt.

According to Deutsche Welle (DW), family sources said Gamal died peacefully following a prolonged illness. He had been receiving care at a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke.

Born in Accra, Ghana, to Kwame Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Nkrumah, Gamal built a career in journalism, becoming known for his coverage of African politics, international affairs and Pan-Africanism.

He worked for more than 15 years as an editor and columnist at Al-Ahram Weekly, an English-language publication in Egypt, where he wrote about political developments across Africa and international relations.

His work reflected a longstanding interest in Pan-Africanism, the political and cultural movement advocating solidarity and cooperation among African peoples and people of African descent.

Gamal was the son of Kwame Nkrumah, who led Ghana to independence from British colonial rule in 1957 and became the country’s first president.

His father was a prominent advocate of African unity and played a major role in the development of Pan-African political thought.

Gamal’s burial will take place in Egypt on October 17, in accordance with Islamic traditions, family sources said.

His family added that details of memorial arrangements would be announced at a later date.
