If you have ever topped up a data bundle only to find it nearly gone by the next morning, you are not alone. Nigerians spent N3.67 trillion on internet data in the first half of 2026 alone, according to figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission, yet the complaint that data “finishes too fast” remains one of the most common grievances among mobile subscribers across the country.

The network is rarely the problem. In most cases, the phone itself is spending the bundle. Here are the main reasons why.

Video streaming

Streaming video is the single heaviest consumer of mobile data. The NCC estimates that one hour of high-definition video on platforms such as YouTube, Netflix and TikTok consumes approximately 1GB of data. At higher quality settings, that figure can reach 3GB per hour.

What makes it worse is that most video apps automatically switch to the highest available quality the moment they detect a fast connection. A subscriber on 4G will be served HD video without ever requesting it.

On TikTok specifically, the app pre-loads upcoming videos in the background even while the current one is still playing.

MTN Nigeria’s General Manager of Network Performance, Michael Ndukwe, demonstrated at a public forum in Lagos in June 2026 that a single 15-second TikTok clip viewed in standard definition consumes between 2MB and 3MB. The same clip in Full HD can exceed 20MB. Subscribers who reduce video quality settings to 480p on YouTube or activate Data Saver on TikTok can cut consumption by as much as six times without a noticeable difference in picture quality on a phone screen. Downloading content on Wi-Fi and watching it later remains the most efficient approach.

Automatic app updates

Many subscribers lose significant data overnight without ever opening a single app. The reason is automatic updates. Most smartphones are configured by default to download app and system updates in the background, including while the owner is asleep.
MTN Nigeria’s help centre confirms that overnight data loss is commonly caused by app or system updates running without the subscriber’s knowledge.

The company has gone further with its Data Usage Portal, which provides visibility into data consumption across applications and services. In contrast, Airtel provides data-management and account information through its self-care services, allowing subscribers to monitor their data position and manage their accounts. Globacom’s Glo Café gives subscribers with account and data-management functions, while the company also guides managing data consumption.

The NCC advises disabling automatic updates over mobile data entirely, setting the device to update apps on Wi-Fi only. On Android, you can do this in the Google Play Store settings. On iPhone, it is found under Settings, then App Store, then App Updates.

Background app refresh

Beyond updates, apps continue to consume data even when a subscriber is not actively using them. Email clients fetch new messages every few minutes. Social media apps refresh feeds in the background. News applications pre-load headlines and images. Weather apps update location data. Each individual pull is small, but across dozens of apps running simultaneously around the clock, the cumulative drain is substantial.
The NCC identifies background app activity as one of the primary causes of unexplained data depletion. Disabling background refresh for apps that do not require it — done through Battery settings on Android or Background App Refresh under General settings on iPhone — can extend a bundle considerably.

Cloud backups

Cloud backup services are among the least visible but most data-intensive processes running on a typical smartphone. Google Photos, iCloud and similar services are set by default to back up every photograph and video taken on the device. A single video shot at a wedding or ceremony can run to several hundred megabytes. A week’s worth of photos can exceed 1GB.
Most subscribers are unaware these services are running at all, let alone that they are doing so over mobile data. Setting cloud backups to operate on Wi-Fi only, or scheduling them for periods when the phone is connected to a home or office network, eliminates this drain entirely.

WhatsApp auto-downloads

WhatsApp is installed on virtually every smartphone in Nigeria and is, for many subscribers, the primary reason they buy data at all. It is also one of the most persistent background data consumers on the device. By default, WhatsApp automatically downloads every photo, video, audio file and document sent to every group and individual chat the subscriber belongs to.
For a subscriber in multiple active group chats — a common situation in Nigeria — this means hundreds of files are downloaded daily without any action on the subscriber’s part. Many of those files, forwarded memes and repeated voice notes among them, are never opened.
Turning off auto-download in WhatsApp Settings under Storage and Data, and selecting “Wi-Fi only” or “Never” for videos and audio over mobile data, stops this drain immediately.

Knowing where your data goes

MTN Nigeria launched a Data on Trial initiative in 2026 to give subscribers greater visibility into their consumption. The MyMTN application includes a data usage breakdown showing how much each app on the device has consumed. Daily SMS notifications are available to subscribers who activate them, and MTN’s online data calculator allows users to estimate expected usage before purchasing a bundle.
Karl Toriola, Chief Executive of MTN Nigeria, acknowledged the scale of the issue at a stakeholder engagement earlier this year:

“As technology evolves, so does the volume of data consumed. Our responsibility is to ensure our customers understand where that consumption is going.”

The NCC recommends that subscribers monitor usage through their device settings, restrict background data for non-essential apps, and contact their network provider if consumption appears inconsistent with their actual usage patterns.
