APC Governorship Candidate joins NDC; Details Emerge

The ongoing peace accord between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is facing potential challenges as the 2027 general elections approach. Reports indicate that both political figures are revisiting their positions regarding the succession of Fubara as governor. This rising tension is reportedly connected to a peace agreement facilitated by President Bola Tinubu, which allegedly included a commitment from Fubara not to pursue re-election in 2027 and to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna is set to dump the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Gawuna will join the NDC alongside immediate past Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo.

Their planned exit follows recent moves by key opposition figures, including former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who have also aligned with the NDC as part of ongoing political changes ahead of the 2027 elections.

A video that circulated online on Sunday showed both Kwankwaso and Obi receiving membership cards of the NDC during what appeared to be a formal registration process.

The development came shortly after reports emerged that the two politicians held a private meeting with leaders of the NDC at the Abuja residence of the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson.

On Monday, aides of Gwarzo and Gawuna confirmed that both men are set to make their defection public soon.

Gwarzo’s spokesperson indicated that his decision is linked to Kwankwaso’s political direction, saying that he is unlikely to remain in a different party from his political ally.

In the same vein, a close aide of Gawuna revealed that the former governorship candidate has completed plans to leave the ADC. He is said to be consulting with key figures as he prepares to join the NDC.

The source added that the decision is part of efforts to stay active in the changing political space ahead of the next general elections.
