Five States That Could Stop Tinubu’s 2027 Ambition

As political realignments quietly gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, fresh indicators suggest that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) could face stiff resistance in key northern states.
Multiple party insiders and analysts point to at least five states where emerging alliances, opposition strength, and internal party cracks may pose significant challenges to the APC’s electoral prospects.
Kano
Kano is shaping up once again as a major battleground. The sustained grassroots influence of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso continues to threaten the APC’s dominance. Sources say regaining control of Kano would require a major political recalibration by the ruling party.
Kaduna
In Kaduna, recent political developments suggest a shifting voter base. While the APC has maintained control in the past, insiders admit that internal divisions and public dissatisfaction could open the door for opposition gains if not urgently addressed.
Zamfara
Zamfara remains politically volatile, with a history of defections and electoral disputes. Analysts say ongoing security concerns and leadership struggles have weakened APC’s standing, making the state a likely flashpoint in 2027.
Sokoto
Long regarded as a stronghold of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Sokoto continues to resist APC expansion. Influential political networks in the state are reportedly consolidating ahead of the next election cycle.
Bauchi
Bauchi is also emerging as a difficult terrain for the APC. Backed by established PDP structures and the influence of Bala Mohammed, the opposition appears determined to retain control and expand its reach.
Party sources, however, insist that it is too early to draw firm conclusions, noting that ongoing coalition talks and possible defections could still reshape the political landscape.
“The North will be decisive in 2027, but alignments are still fluid,” a senior APC official said under anonymity. “What looks like a stronghold today can change overnight.”
With less than two years to the next general election, observers say the battle lines are gradually being drawn, and the contest for northern dominance is already taking center stage.
