KEHINDE BANKOLE : Playing Funmilayo Ransome- Kuti inspired my new movement

Award-Winning actress Kehinde Bankole has announced that she is set to unveil her new non-governmental organisation, ‘What About the People (WATP).’

The initiative marks a significant turning point for Bankole, whose passion for social change was reinforced by her transformative experience portraying the Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti in the new biopic by Bolanle Austen-Peters.

“Stepping into the shoes of such a fearless advocate opened my eyes differently to the immense challenges faced by the Nigerian people. Funmilayo’s unwavering commitment to change and justice resonated deeply with me, and I knew I had to do something tangible to make a difference.

“It has awakened the knowledge that patriotism and activism can work together hand in hand without being seen as antagonistic or problematic, it’s all for the good of the people,” she added.

According to Bankole, WATP aims to empower and advocate for underserved communities in Nigeria, focusing on critical areas like re-orientation, education, and sensitisation to both the people’s duties and their rights in their development, not just one or the other and also support for women in these areas.

She further said that the organisation will work collaboratively with local partners and stakeholders to develop sustainable solutions that address the root causes of poverty, inequality, and social injustice.

Bankole’s dedication to social causes extends beyond ‘What About the People.’

While she remains tight-lipped on any potential foray into politics, she emphasises her commitment to using her platform as a celebrity to amplify the voices of the marginalised and advocate for positive change.

“Whether through film, community impact or other endeavours, I intend to use my influence to create a more equitable Nigeria. We know the issues here and there, the question is ‘Are we willing to proffer solutions in our little ways?’ But it is not about the Government alone, we need to ask, ‘What about the people?’ and take action to ensure their eventual well-being is prioritised.”

The Mavin Records artistes, who revealed this in an interview, claimed that some anonymous persons in the industry attempted to discourage him by disparaging his musical style.

According to Ladipoe, they advised him to relocate to another part of the world if he wanted to be a musician, but he ignored them, and now all of his songs have exceeded his expectations.

When I first started making music, I was told that because of my style, no one would ever listen to my songs here in Nigeria and that I should try elsewhere in the world.”“It is human nature for satisfaction to be elusive. I feel this applies twice as much to creative people, such as artistes like myself. I am grateful but not satisfied.”

In another part of the interview, Ladipoe discussed a moment when he got a disappointing reaction from fans during one of his performances in his early career.

He revealed; “I remember once, early in my career, I came on stage with so much energy and shouted into the microphone, ‘Who is ready for some more hip-hop’?. Meanwhile, that was a time when hip-hop music was facing serious fluctuation in its appeal.

“The overwhelming response from the crowd was, ‘no’. I remember being so deflated. To make matters worse, my band started off by playing the wrong song first, which further demoralized me. It was terrible. But, I look back now and laugh. I am grateful for growth.”

Phyna cries out over vandalized car at airport

Phyna, a reality TV star, voiced her anguish after realizing that her Mercedes Benz had been vandalized while parked at an airport.

On July 11, 2024, she posted a video on social media showing the damage: portion of the car’s silver panels had been forcefully removed.

In her post, she lamented: “I parked my car at the airport to go and work only to come back; they’ve removed this and the person tried removing the other side… na me and them for this airport today.”

Supportive fans swamped the comments, urging against future airport parking. One follower warned, “Dem no dey park anyhow for airport ooo. Those people are mean ooo. Just hold like 30 to 50k oooo.”

Another user advised, “Ahhhhh that’s why I don’t suggest taking or parking cars at the airport if one wants to travel. It’s best someone use Uber and park the car at home jeje, because I don’t trust these security guys at all. Heii, please baby, next time no park for airport o. Sorry for this, love.”

Reflecting on security measures, a fan asked, “You see the money for parking—no pay at all. Are they not supposed to have securities like security men, security cameras and also security lights at the airport packing lots?”

Offering practical counsel, another follower stated, “Was it parked at the owner’s risk or caretakers’ risk? Anyway…you go pay for parking and security yet money go waste. That’s Nigeria for you. Take it easy.”
