Obaseki fulfils N70,000 minimum wage promise to workers

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has announced a new minimum wage for Edo workers from N40,000 to N70,000 effective from May 1, 2024.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has fulfilled his promise to pay workers N70,000 minimum wage. The governor, while inaugurating the Labour House earlier in the year, promised to increase minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000, beginning with May salary.

Obaseki made the promise during the inauguration of Labour House in Benin.

Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, in a press statement yesterday, said the payment of N70,000 minimum wage to the workers further demonstrates commitment of the Obaseki-led administration to the welfare of Edo workers.

He said: “The government has paid May salaries, reflecting the implementation of the N70,000 new minimum wage. This is in fulfilment of Governor Obaseki’s promise to increase the minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000, beginning this May, as part of efforts to cushion the impacts of the harsh economy.

“It is also in furtherance of the government’s commitment to meeting its statutory obligation, even before the end of the month.”
