Court summons five persons for defamation of Mercy Chinwo

Published

on

The Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse Zone 2, has summoned five social media users for “criminal defamation” of the reputation of gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo; and her husband, Blessed Uzochikwa.

In the court summons dated April 3, 2024, sighted by Channels Television, Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna ordered the five defendants to appear in person before the court on April 23, 2023, to answer the charges levelled against the complainants.

The complainants in the matter are Blessed Uzochikwa and Mercy Chinwo while the five defendants are Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, DJ Spoiltkid, Terrence Ekot, and Samuel Agozie.

The suit stemmed from posts made by the defendants last week after the gospel singer and her husband posted a picture of their son on Instagram. After the picture of the baby, who was born in 2023, was posted, the defendants alleged that there was a resemblance between the baby and another gospel singer, Nathaniel Bassey, and claimed that he was the father, an allegation that went viral.

In a criminal complaint filed by the complainants’ lawyers led by Pelumi Olajengbesi of Abuja-based law firm, Law Corridor, Mercy Chinwo and her husband said the alleged actions of the defendants amounted to cyber intimidation, injurious falsehood, and cyberstalking targeted at their persons.

The complainants said the alleged actions of the defendants are contrary to Sections 391 of the Penal Code and Section 24 (1)(B) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act 2015.

The “individuals criminally injured the reputation and image of the complainants across the globe resulting from their intentional defamatory posts and an act of cyberstalking,” the lawyers said in a criminal complaint filed before the magistrate.

Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna thereafter directed the five defendants to appear before the court on April 23, 2024, to answer the charges.

Bassey has also taken action over the matter. The ‘Jesus Iye’ crooner — through his lawyers — had petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate and prosecute four persons whom he accused of criminal defamation and cyberstalking. The four social media users in Bassey’s petition are Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot and Dj Spoiltkid.

Bassey’s lawyers said the alleged actions of the four individuals contravened Sections 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.).

“The consequences of making such statements on social media have been known to tarnish the reputations of individuals, render marriages unstable, and many never recover from them. International reputation is an asset—both for the individual and for the nation—and it takes time to acquire.

“Consequently, we urge you to use your good offices to, in the interest of justice, investigate this matter, arrest, and bring the suspect to justice, which will serve as a deterrent to others.”

Bassey, popularly known as “Pastor Nath” is the convener of online interdenominational worship programme, Hallelujah Challenge. He also pastors a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

2027: APC finally welcomes Kwankwaso’s defection, reveals condition

Chelsea Predicted Lineup vs Fulham for April 20

There’s something they call white lie. My story is crazy, when I say crazy I mean I need to write a book about my life because sometimes when I sit down and I look at the mirror and I look at myself I’m like oh girl, how did you pull through?

I didn’t come from a balanced family. When I say balanced, I don’t mean financially. My family financially were very okay, but my upbringing wasn’t balanced because of the things that were going on with my dad and my mom and my family. So I did not come from a balanced family and one thing I craved and wanted was my kids to have a balanced home.

So when that didn’t happen, the first thing I did was to block my kids off everything that was going on. My kids didn’t have access to social media or phone or anything until they were like probably 15 or 14.

That was when I allowed them to start even knowing what they call social media or whatever it is. They didn’t have access to reading newspapers or anything because I told a lot of white lies and that was the fact that your dad is a traveler, he travels a lot.

So they didn’t realize that we were separated for a very long time and I made sure that no matter how angry I was with their dad, I allowed him access to his kids when he came home to visit. I bought Christmas gifts, New Year gifts. I always had to double the gifts I will buy: one from him, one for me and make sure his own is bigger.

After scandalous marriage, Toke Makinwa don’t mind becoming 5th wife, gives reasons.

After scandalous marriage, Toke Makinwa don't mind becoming 5th wife, gives reasons.

Following a tumultuous and highly publicized scandalous marriage, media personality Toke Makinwa has expressed a willingness to embrace the role of a fifth wife.

According to Nigerian Tribune, she shares her reasons with conviction, revealing layers of resilience and an open heart, unafraid of the societal judgment that often accompanies such a bold choice.

In a recent episode posted on Instagram, Toke humorously but openly declared her readiness to become a second, third, or even fifth wife if the opportunity arose.

Toke has often spoken about how the breakup left her emotionally wounded and forced her into deep reflection.

“That chapter left me broken,” she once said, describing how hard it was to move on after such betrayal.

Now, at 40, she’s embracing her reality with a new sense of confidence and clarity. Rejecting societal pressure, she boldly stated: “I’m 40, single, and childless. I said it—and nothing happened.”

Toke also acknowledged that had she rushed into another relationship, she might have ended up in another failed marriage.

“I used to be ashamed… but the truth is, if I’d remarried, it would have ended in another divorce. Life teaches hard lessons,” she admitted.

Her willingness to consider a polygamous marriage arrangement challenges traditional views, especially around what’s considered acceptable for women.

“At this stage in my life, I’d marry again—even if it means being wife number five,” she joked.

Her comment reflects a change in her outlook on love and marriage, possibly shaped by the painful end of her marriage to Maje Ayida in 2017, which ended in scandal.

Toke’s story is resonating with many who face similar societal expectations. Through her transparency, she’s not just stirring controversy—she’s promoting a new understanding of love, fulfillment, and personal growth.

Her courage in addressing these often-taboo topics is sparking meaningful discussions about what it really means to live a full and authentic life today.
