Operatives of the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad (STS), who took over the investigation, said emerging findings suggest the possibility that individuals familiar with the monarch’s movements may have had knowledge of events leading to the ambush.

A crime scene reduced to ashes
Investigators said the attackers intercepted the monarch’s vehicle, opened fire and set it ablaze while the occupants were still inside.

By the time help arrived, the vehicle had been completely burnt. The remains of the victims were severely charred, limiting the amount of physical evidence available at the scene.

The condition of the scene reinforced initial assumptions that the attack bore the hallmarks of previous violent incidents in the region.

The victims’ bodies were severely burnt, leaving detectives with little physical evidence and a community struggling to comprehend the brutality of the attack.

Piecing together the monarch’s final hours
The investigation commenced after the monarch’s younger brother, Ewneme Tonna Justice, reported the killings to the police. He told detectives he received a distress call informing him that his brother’s convoy had been attacked while returning from community engagements.

After confirming the information with relatives, he rushed to the scene, where he found the burnt vehicle containing the charred remains of the monarch and the other five. That report triggered a full homicide investigation by the STS.

Detectives interviewed relatives, community leaders, residents and other potential witnesses while painstakingly retracing the monarch’s final movements.
They sought to determine who knew his itinerary, who interacted with him before he departed and whether the attack had been carefully planned.

Investigation changes direction
As intelligence gathering progressed, investigators identified several persons of interest. Coordinated operations led to multiple arrests, each one, according to police, providing fresh pieces in what had become a complex puzzle.

Among those arrested was a former President-General of Ochia Autonomous Community whom police are investigating for allegations linking him to the planning and financing of the attack. Although he denied any involvement during interrogation, investigators said his statement was being examined alongside other evidence.

Detectives also arrested two members of a local vigilante group, alleged to have escorted the monarch shortly before the attack. Investigators are looking at the possibility that the monarch’s movement might have been passed to those who later ambushed the convoy.

Another suspect was arrested over allegations that he might have provided financial or logistical support to persons under investigation but detectives said they were verifying the information obtained from his statement and other intelligence sources.

Witness provides another lead

Police said another breakthrough came after detectives obtained a statement from a witness identified as Ikwerede.
According to investigators, the witness provided information they believe could help explain the events that led to the killings and identify relationships among some of the individuals under investigation.

The witness allegedly told detectives that a meeting was held in March at the premises of Debalmar Oil Limited, where petroleum operations and community affairs in Ochia Autonomous Community were discussed.

Investigators are examining whether anything that occurred before, during, or after that meeting had any connection with the monarch’s killing.
The witness also allegedly identified individuals known by the aliases “Acid,” “Morocco,” “SARS Man,” and “Thunder,” and supplied telephone numbers, which police believe could assist in the ongoing investigations.

Following the evidence
Beyond witness accounts, detectives have widened the investigation to include digital and financial evidence.

Police recommended forensic examinations of the telephone numbers and recovered mobile phones to analyse call records, messages, location history, and financial transactions.
Investigators were also examining bank accounts allegedly linked to some persons under investigation, while pursuing legal processes to monitor financial activities and track suspects who are still at large.

Despite the extensive burning of the victims’ bodies, detectives ordered post-mortem examinations to establish the exact medical causes of death and preserve scientific evidence that could become crucial if criminal charges were eventually filed.
Investigators continue comparing witness statements with forensic findings and intelligence reports in an effort to establish a complete timeline of events and determine the role, if any, played by every individual under investigation.

The search for answers
Police said the investigation has fundamentally changed their understanding of the case.

What initially appeared to be another attack blamed on unknown gunmen is now being investigated as a possible conspiracy, in which information allegedly supplied by people familiar with the monarch’s movements might have contributed to the deadly ambush.

The investigation is being coordinated by the Force Intelligence Department’s Special Tactical Squad under ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey.

Detectives are still searching for suspects who remain at large, while forensic examinations and intelligence gathering continue. The Nigeria Police Force said the investigation was being conducted in line with the directives of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Disu, emphasising intelligence-led policing, due process, and respect for the rule of law.

For the people of Ochia, however, the pain runs deeper than the investigation. A king who returned home to serve his people never lived long enough to fulfil that promise.

Instead, his final journey ended in flames, leaving behind a grieving kingdom and a murder mystery whose full story, investigators said, has yet to be told.
