Meet APC Lawmaker Tipped to Emerge as Next Lagos Assembly Speaker

Emirship tussle not reason for delay in resumption, says Kano assembly

As political calculations ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election continue to gather momentum, speculation is mounting that a female lawmaker could emerge as the next Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The discussions are linked to growing reports that the next governor of Lagos may emerge from Lagos East Senatorial District, a development that could trigger a fresh power-balancing arrangement within the state’s political structure.

Political observers believe that if Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Hamzat, who is widely regarded as a strong contender for the governorship, secures his party’s ticket and eventually becomes governor, attention could shift to the Lagos State House of Assembly leadership.

In the midst of these permutations, some party stakeholders and political analysts have suggested that former Speaker Mojisola Meranda could again be considered for the Assembly’s top position due to her experience and prominence within the legislature.

Meranda made history in January 2025 when she emerged as Speaker following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa. Her tenure, however, was short-lived as she resigned on March 3, 2025, in a move aimed at restoring stability within the Assembly after a prolonged leadership crisis. Obasa was subsequently reinstated as Speaker.

While there has been no official indication from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the Lagos Assembly regarding any future leadership changes, political insiders say conversations around zoning and gender inclusion are already shaping discussions ahead of the next political cycle.

Supporters of the idea argue that a female Speaker would further strengthen women’s representation in Lagos politics, especially if broader political arrangements create an opening for a leadership transition within the Assembly.
