“Buhari Is Me” — Tinubu Defends Leadership Continuity

President Bola Tinubu has stirred reactions after saying he “took over from himself” following the administration of the late Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as a close ally and partner.
Tinubu made the remark on April 16 while hosting the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Explaining his statement, the President suggested continuity between both administrations, noting their long-standing political alliance within the All Progressives Congress (APC). “I took over leadership from myself; late Buhari is me, he was my partner,” he said.
Tinubu, widely seen as instrumental to Buhari’s rise in 2015, said his government builds on that shared foundation. Responding to critics, he pointed to his record as former Lagos State governor, referencing initiatives like the “Jigi Bola” programme, where eyeglasses were distributed to people with vision challenges.
