Northern politicians plotting to use Buhari to unseat Tinubu in 2027, Shehu Sani alleges
Shehu Sani, a former senator, says the recent visits by northern politicians to former President Muhammadu Buhari are calculated moves to work against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
In the past few weeks, several northern politicians have visited Buhari in his home town of Daura, Katsina state.
On June 22, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Aminu Tambuwal, ex-governor of Sokoto, visited Buhari.
About 24 hours later, Nasir el-Rufai, an ex-governor of Kaduna, also visited the former president.
In a statement on Monday, Sani said that though the visits have been tagged as “Sallah homage,” they have a political undertone.
“The recent visits by some prominent Northern politicians to Daura appear to be the usual Eid homage, but looking deeper and beyond the facade, it’s surreptitiously a new attempt to build a strong northern alliance using ex-President Buhari as a rallying point to challenge and evict President Tinubu’s government in 2027,” the statement reads.
“It’s a regrouping of Northern political forces for the next general election. A project that will eventually kiss the dust.
“They want to resurrect Buhari’s political charm and fanaticism and mobilise the gullible to another hollow and bewildering end.
“They want to stock up and light up the Arewa sentiment without considering the inferno it would eventually generate.”
Sani said Buhari, a northerner who served as president for eight years, did not make a significant impact on the nation.
“They had power and wasted it. What do they want to do with it again?” the former senator queried.
“A southerner is in power just for one year. It’s too early for the desperate and power-hungry northern elite to start plotting.
“The south never did that to Buhari. Their intended action has the capacity of ruining the democratic process and wrecking the fragile unity of the country when the south is awakened to this reality. Their obsession with power is condemnable.
“Opposition to Tinubu from the point of policies, promises and programs of his administration is a democratic right of any Nigerian.
“People have the right to speak and criticize the government. But attempts to whip up Northern sentiments to achieve their political ends is a dangerous political experiment and expedition at this material time.
“No serious southerner challenged Buhari for eight years. These power-drunk Northern politicians are dragging the region to a new political journey through a land mine.
“The Daura homage of the disgruntled and the obsessed will fail. Our people in the North should reject these faces and their plots.
“They have nothing to offer. From the abandoned Baro Port, Ajaokuta, Lake Chad basin refiling and Mambilla hydropower, they failed.”

The source added that Jonathan might choose to align himself with a prominent candidate from the northern region, potentially selecting either Rabiu Kwankwaso or Bala Mohammed as his running mate.
In the meantime, the PDP Governors’ Forum, under the leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, has formally endorsed Shekarau as the consensus national chairman in anticipation of the party’s convention slated for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Wike, serving as the minister of the FCT since 2023, is a key ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Legit reports that while Nigerian hospitals battle with inadequate equipment and funding, most of the country’s politicians routinely travel for medical treatment in the United Kingdom (UK).
However, checks by Legit.ng indicate that no other reputable platforms have the report
Lere Olayinka, senior special assistant on public communication and social media to Nyesom Wike, on Sunday, September 14, disclosed that his principal will be on a popular political show on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
The online news platform said sources privy to the minister’s health status informed it that Wike has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and is currently under medical management in the UK. Apart from that, no such articles from any credible news outlet.

Wike, governor of Rivers state from 2015 to 2023, is widely considered a strong ally of President Bola Tinubu.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member supported Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the 2023 poll. Tinubu eventually won the 2023 presidential election.
Wike was the leader of the G5, a group of then-PDP governors who were aggrieved with the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and the PDP national leadership at the time.
After his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Tinubu appointed Wike as the minister of the FCT, Abuja, apparently as a reward for his support to the president during the election.
Lately, users put up posts on social media claiming that Wike suffered a heart failure and is in grave danger of dying. But how true is this? We probed..
Wike ‘away from duty’
We discovered that the story about Wike’s alleged severe illness was published by Nigerian blog, Sahara Reporters. The media outlet said sources privy to the minister’s health status informed it that Wike has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and is currently under medical management in the UK. Apart from that, no such articles from any credible news outlet.
Also, we found that it has been a while since Wike appeared at public events. Wike was last seen at the flag off of the emergency rehabilitation and dualisation of the Karu Interchange, Customs Clinic Junction road, Abuja, on Wednesday, September 3.

He has been represented at two public events since that time, fuelling rumours that he might be out of the country for medical reasons. On Thursday, September 4, chief of staff Chidi Amadi stood in for Wike at the flag off the distribution of fertilisers at 50 percent subsidised rates to farmers across the six area councils of the FCT.
Similarly, on Thursday, September 11, Mariya Mahmud Bunkure, the minister of state for the FCT, represented Wike at the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Nigeria (APSON’s) 24th annual general meeting (AGM) and scientific conference in Abuja. Vanguard noted Mariya filling in for Wike at the event.
Wike’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, who is vocal on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter), and is often swift to quash certain reports related to his principal, has yet to issue a statement to debunk or confirm the development.
As discussions surrounding a potential resurgence of former President Goodluck Jonathan become increasingly prominent, various governors and influential political figures have commenced efforts to mobilize support for him in an election expected to be highly competitive.
