Abiodun’s Loyalists Accuse Gbenga Daniel of Sponsoring Media War

A political support group in Ogun State, Sustainability of Ogun State and Dapo Abiodun Legacy Beyond 2027, has launched a scathing defence of Governor Dapo Abiodun amid rising political tensions with former governor and senator, Gbenga Daniel.
The group, led by its convener, Dr Arabambi Abayomi, accused Daniel of allegedly sponsoring media attacks and “keyboard warriors” against Abiodun over the emerging political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a lengthy statement issued on Thursday, the group described Abiodun as “a performing governor” whose achievements in infrastructure, industrialisation and economic growth had allegedly unsettled his political opponents.
The statement came amid growing political disagreements within the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress over succession arrangements and political alignments ahead of the next election cycle.
Abayomi alleged that recent articles criticising the governor were sponsored attempts to tarnish his image, insisting that Abiodun had transformed Ogun into one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing economies.
According to him, the state’s Internally Generated Revenue increased from about N45bn to over N240bn annually under the current administration, while the state’s Gross Domestic Product allegedly rose from N4tn to about N17tn.
He further claimed that Abiodun had maintained political stability in the state and ensured peaceful governance.
The group also dismissed allegations of diversion of local government funds levelled against the governor, describing them as recycled claims earlier made by a former local government chairman.
Abayomi maintained that the state government had instead supported local councils with financial interventions during periods of revenue shortfall.
“The governor augmented allocations to local governments when federal allocations could not even cover salaries. That cannot be described as diversion,” he stated.
The group also faulted renewed references to Abiodun’s alleged 1986 arrest in the United States, arguing that the issue had no legal implication on his eligibility to hold public office.
According to the statement, Abiodun had contested elections and survived legal scrutiny in Nigerian courts without disqualification.
Abayomi further accused Daniel of resisting the political consensus within the APC in Ogun State following recent endorsements and alignments involving the governor.
He claimed that Abiodun had secured unprecedented acceptance among party stakeholders across the state.
The group also highlighted the recent international operations at the Gateway International Airport, where hundreds of Muslim pilgrims were reportedly airlifted directly to Saudi Arabia for the 2026 Hajj exercise.
It described the development as a landmark achievement for Ogun State and evidence of Abiodun’s infrastructural drive.
“The people of Ogun State can see the projects, the roads, the industries and the airport development. These are tangible achievements that cannot be erased by media attacks,” the statement added.
Abayomi urged party delegates and stakeholders not to be swayed by what he described as propaganda and sponsored publications.
He said, “The season has turned. Every leader has his time. The people will ultimately decide who represents their interests moving forward.”
