2027: Atiku May Step Down for Obi, Seek to Install VP in ADC — Sources

Speculation is intensifying within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar may be considering stepping aside from the party’s 2027 presidential race in favour of Peter Obi, while positioning himself to influence the choice of a vice-presidential candidate.
Multiple party sources disclosed that high-level consultations and strategic meetings are ongoing among key stakeholders to build a strong opposition coalition ahead of the next general election.
According to insiders, Atiku is said to be weighing the political benefits of backing Obi, who commands significant support among youths and urban voters, while negotiating for a trusted ally to emerge as the party’s vice-presidential nominee.
“There is serious discussion about a possible Obi-Atiku political understanding. Nothing is final yet, but talks are ongoing,” a senior party official said.
“If all deals are agreed, Atiku will pick the VP and other important positions while Obi agrees to serve one term,”
Supporters of the arrangement believe it could help unify opposition forces and boost the ADC’s national spread, combining Obi’s popularity in the South with Atiku’s influence in the North.
However, the alleged plan has reportedly sparked concern among some ADC leaders, who fear that external influence could undermine internal democracy.
“This party must not become a platform for political bargains that ignore members,” a chieftain warned.
Neither Atiku nor Obi has publicly commented on the reports, while ADC officials maintained that no candidate has been endorsed ahead of the party’s primaries.
“Our process remains open and transparent. Everyone is free to contest,” a spokesperson said.
Political analysts say if the speculated alliance materialises, it could significantly reshape the 2027 contest and reposition the ADC as a major opposition force.
For now, the development remains in the realm of political speculation, as behind-the-scenes negotiations continue.
