PAOK join Iheanacho race

Iheanacho, Ndidi face promotion setback after Leicester defeat

Recently crowned Greece Super League champions PAOK Thessaloniki have entered the race for Nigeria international, Kelechi Iheanacho, with the player set to become a free agent, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

After seven seasons with Leicester City Iheanacho is set to become a free agent with his contract set to expire next month.

At the just concluded Championship season, the 27-year-old made 23 league appearances, contributing five goals and an assist as the Foxes were crowned champions to gain automatic promotion to the English Premier League.

Of the 23 league appearances, Iheanacho started 10 and was used as a substitute on 13 occasions from 46 league fixtures making a miserly 916 minutes from a possible 4,140 minutes.

Iheanacho’s total minutes played showed that he was no longer an integral part of the team and has thus not been offered a new contract despite having just a month left.

That has made the 27-year-old forward attractive for prospective suitors and he is reportedly wanted by some Turkish and Premier League clubs, including Aston Villa.

However, reports from Greece indicate that PAOK Thessaloniki are also interested in Iheanacho and are monitoring his situation.

“PAOK’S case of Kelechi Iheanacho is under consideration,” a Greek publication wrote on X.

“The footballer’s contract is expiring and he has not been offered a renewal by Leicester. In addition to Greece, there is also interest from Turkey and England for the player.”

Should the deal go through, Iheanacho could share the same dressing room with compatriots William Troost-Ekong.

Man United linked with Bologna's Zirkzee

Manchester United are interested in a move for Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, according to Sky Sports Deutschland’s Florian Plettenberg.

The Premier League side are reported to be long-term admirers of the 23-year-old, having kept close tabs on him in January, and it is now said that “concrete talks” are underway with his representatives.

AC Milan have been one of the sides linked strongly with Zirkzee recently, and the Red Devils are reportedly aware of their interest in his signature, but while the Rossoneri are still in the race, there is optimism from Old Trafford that they could be able to successfully win the race for him. He has a release clause in his contract that can be activated for €40 million.

Zirkzee, who is at the European Championship with Netherlands, scored 11 goals while assisting another four in 36 Serie A matches last season.

Messi, Inter Miami could win Premier League title – Aguero

Former Manchester City striker, Sergio Aguero, has claimed Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are good enough to win the Premier League.

Messi joined the MLS side last year as a free agent after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner won a first major piece of silverware with the team last season in the Leagues Cup.

Messi has fired Inter Miami to the top of the Eastern Conference standings in the current campaign.

This has led to Aguero, who played on international level with Messi, to tell Stake.com: “I think they would win the league.

“They have Messi who is the GOAT, and with him, even winning the Premier is possible.”

Euro 2024: I made alot of mistakes – Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes

Portugal midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, has insisted he made ‘a lot of mistakes’ during his side’s victory against Czech Republic at the ongoing Euro 2024.

Fernandes featured as Portugal defeated Czech Republic 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Francisco Conceicao scored the winning goal to give Portugal all three points against Czech in Leipzig.

Speaking at his post-match interview, Fernandes told reporters:

“We made a lot of mistakes in the first half, especially me.

“Taking risks has two sides of the coin. I am aware of this. The midfielders take more risks.

“But also, once I can pass the ball, I have a lot of quality in front of me to score a goal.

“So I’m not worried about making mistakes, because it is part of the game.”

Fernandes will hope to lead Portugal to victory when they face Turkey in their next game on Saturday.

Ofili targets podium finish at Paris 2024

Delta State-born Favour Ofili now has her eyes on a podium finish at the Paris 2024 after she triumphantly blazed to clocking 11.06s to grab her maiden women’s 100m title on Day 1 of the Nigerian Olympic Trials in Benin.

Victory at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin handed Ofili an automatic qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

“I feel great and I am still hungry for more,” she said in a flash interview while urging Nigerians to continue praying for her ahead of the Paris Olympics. “ The secret is being patient. I didn’t leave 400, my coach observed and did what a coach ought to do. That’s why I am still there.

“I will go there and do what I am supposed to do more importantly, stay healthy. You all should pray for me to be healthy because if I am healthy, you know what I can do.”

Ofili ran a new personal best of 11.06 to secure her first National Championships 100m title as she African Games silver medalist, Olayinka Olajide who came second in 11.37 secs and Justina Eyakpobeyan, the Commonwealth Youth Games silver medal winner who came in third in 11.47s.

According to the AFN , Ofili’s time also secured her a place in the 100m event after Rosemary Chukwuma and Tima Godbless. She has now won two individual titles at the Championships following her 200m win in 2019 in Kaduna.

Ofili has now qualified to represent Nigeria in both the 100m and 200m event and has become the second Nigerian woman after Godbless to qualify for both sprint events.

Former athlete and long jumper Chinedu Odozor-Onikeku described the race as demanding having extracted the best performance from Ofili who had shone like stars at previous competitions abroad.

In the men’s version, Kanyinsola Ajayi also emerged as first time Nigeria 100m title winner after speeding past(10.14) Alaba Akintola (10.16s) and defending champion, Usheoritse Itsekiri (10.22s.).

Ajayi is however unable to secure his passage to the Olympics at the Championships as he needs to run 10.00 seconds to do so.

In the men’s Shot Put, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi successfully defended his title with a 21.37m effort. It is his fourth straight title win and five overall after winning on his debut in the competition in Sapele in 2016

Eyes on Ronaldo as Portugal open Euro 2024 account

Ronaldo scores hat-trick as Al Nassr thrash Abha

Portugal defender Ruben Dias said Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence shows their squad they can achieve anything as they prepare to make their Euro 2024 bow against the Czech Republic today..

Portugal won Euro 2016 and are spearheaded by 39-year-old superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo, preparing to play at a record-extending sixth Euros.

Ronaldo, the record men’s international goalscorer with 130 strikes for his country, is also the all-time top scorer at the tournament with 14, a distance ahead of former France great Michel Platini in second spot on nine goals.

“I would say he represents inspiration, he represents that anything is possible, he represents all that you can dream, and achieve it,” Manchester City centre-back Dias told a news conference. “Mainly I would like to say it’s a pleasure to have him with us. More than all these little things or big things, him being with us in this moment of his career represents that he wants to win again.

“He’s our captain and obviously we follow him to the end.”

If Ronaldo scores at the Euros this summer he will become the competition’s oldest goalscorer of all-time, breaking a record set by Austria’s Ivica Vastic at 38 in Euro 2008.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said Ronaldo’s experience could be vital at the tournament, along with veteran centre-back Pepe, 41.

”(Ronaldo) is very important… at tournaments, Euros and World Cups, the key is a mix of experience and new talent,” said Martinez. “Our team does it perfectly – you mentioned Cristiano, and him and Pepe bring experience nobody else has, they are the two oldest players at the tournament.

“Then we have (the young players too)… we need all of this, they all need to be linked together, committed, that is crucial for us.”

Czech Republic and West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek said his team could not afford to let their guard down against the Al Nassr striker.

“We all know Ronaldo’s quality especially if you give him space,” Soucek told a news conference. “We can’t give him an inch, especially in the area – (there) we need to double our defence on him.

“Our goal is to stop him but obviously we need to stop the rest of the Portuguese team too.”

If Ronaldo fires then Portugal may be able to live up to their billing as one of the favourites to win the tournament.

Martinez said he was aiming for that when asked if he had packed enough clothes in his suitcase to go the full distance.

“We must believe, we need to dream big – if we don’t dream big then it will be tough,” he said.

“Tomorrow will be the right time to show we are ready, that we can meet all the expectations, but after the first three matches we can gauge whether or not we deserve to stay or not.

“I brought seven shirts, not three.”
