An aide to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, during the 2023 general election, Daniel Bwala, has decried the rate of hardship in the country.

Bwala, a former federal lawmaker, lamented the high cost of basic necessities in the country, including food items, transportation, goods and services, medicals and school fees.

In a post via his verified Twitter handle on Sunday, Bwala claimed he receives no less than 30 calls from people daily asking for help.

He wrote, “Nigerians are suffering; men, this is too much. High cost of everything; food items, transportation, goods and services, medicals, school fees.

Crisis rocks appointment of new Alaafin; Oyomesi battles Gov Makinde
The Kingmakers in the ancient town of Oyo (Oyomesi) have called the recent appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin by Governor Seyi Makinde illegal and unlawful.
The Oyo State Government has officially announced that Governor Makinde has sanctioned the appointment of a new Alaafin of Oyo, a development that comes two years after the position became vacant.
However, five Kingmakers from the town have declared the appointment null and void because they did not recommend such a name to the state government, insisting that the only person they recommended as the next Alaafin is Prince Luqman Gbadegesin.
The Kingmakers in a letter to the Governor signed by their legal representative, Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN), including High Chief Yusuf Akínade, Bashorun of Oyo; High Chief Wakeel Akindele, Lagunna of Oyo; High Chief Hamzat Yusuf, Akinniku of Oyo; Chíef Wahab Oyetunji, warrant chief stand-in for Asipa of Oyo, and Chief Gbadebo Mufutau, warrant chief stand-in for Alapinní of Oyo.
The letter reads, “You will recall that on 30th September 2022 at the meeting of the Kingmakers under the Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration, 1961, the Kingmakers appointed Prince Lukman Adelodun Gbadegesin as the Alaafin of Oyo by majority of the lawful votes of the Kingmakers.
“Prince Lukman Adelodun Gbadegesin having obtained the majority of votes of the Kingmakers present and voting was deemed appointed and his name was forwarded to your Excellency as the candidate appointed by the Kingmakers as Alaafin of Oyo for your approval which you refused to approve for no disclosed reason at all. The Kingmakers thereafter filed an action to stop your excellency from truncating the process, culminating in the present appeal at the court of appeal,” the letter read.
The chiefs noted that they were surprised that in the announcement by the government, it claimed that the selection was made after
wide consultation and divination.
“We must emphatically state that the Alaafin is not chosen by consultation or divination but in strict compliance with the Registered Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which codifies the native law and custom governing the selection process for the vacant stool of the Alaafin.
“Under the Registered Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, it is only the Bashorun of Oyo, the head of the Oyomesi and Kingmakers that can, summon a meeting of the Kingmakers to select a candidate to fill the vacant stool of the Alaafin of Oyo.
“In this instance, the Bashorun did not summon any such meeting, nor was there any meeting convened in the Alaafin’s palace, as custom demands where the said Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade was selected or appointed as the new Alaafin.
“Any meeting of few kingmakers and emergency warrant chiefs held at the Governor’s office on the 9th of January 2025 or elsewhere at the instance of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, to select the preferred candidate of the Governor as the new Alaafin is not only contrary to the native law and custom and Chieftaincy Declaration of Alafin of Oyo Chieftaincy but unlawful, illegal, invalid, null and void.
“It is not the duty of the Governor to convene the meeting of few kingmakers and emergency warrant chiefs to select or appoint a new Alaafin on the 9th of January, 2025 and hurriedly approve the appointment on the 10th of January, 2025.”

Customs intercepts 10,970 litres of petrol concealed in sacks by smugglers

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Zone A Operation Whirlwind Unit has intercepted smugglers attempting to transport over 10,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) concealed in sacks by smugglers in Badagry, as reported by The Nation.

In a statement, the Commander of Operation Whirlwind, Mahmood Bello, said that the operation took place on New Year’s Eve.

Customs operatives, he said, conducted surveillance along the waterside in Badagry, where they intercepted 61 sacks and seven jerry cans of PMS loaded in a large canoe headed for the Benin Republic.

Bello added that smugglers had revived an old smuggling technique of concealing PMS in sacks. This marked the first time this method was encountered during Operation Whirlwind, as previous seizures had involved PMS transported in jerry-cans.

According to him: “Recall that the National Coordinator instructed our operatives to intensify efforts during the festive period to prevent smugglers from exploiting the season. On December 31, 2024, our team conducted surveillance along the Badagry waterside and intercepted 61 sacks and seven jerry cans of PMS, all loaded in a large canoe bound for the Benin Republic.

Each sack, according to him, “contained 150 litres, translating to a total of 10,970 litres of PMS. The products were evacuated with reinforcement from the Nigerian military stationed at the Badagry Barracks. The operation was highly successful, with no casualties despite resistance from the smugglers.”

The senior Customs officer added that due to the volatile nature of the seized product, the National Coordinator had ordered its auctioning. The interception highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Customs in curbing smuggling activities along Nigeria’s borders.

FRSC boss, Mohammed hails President Tinubu, pledges improved service delivery

Published

on

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has pledged improved service delivery in 2025.

Mohammed made the pledge in his New Year message on Thursday in Abuja.

He commended the staff of the FRSC for their commitment to a safer road environment, leading to outstanding successes in 2024.

He said that the FRSC would build on the successes of 2024 to improve its services and make Nigerian roads safer.

The corps marshal assured that the FRSC would continue to prioritise the welfare and training of its personnel to enhance their productivity and service delivery.

“Management is committed to enunciating welfare policies that could boost their morals for sustained productivity and improved service delivery to the people,” he said.

Mohammed also emphasised the need for strategic partnership with stakeholders to tackle the menace of road traffic crashes in Nigeria.

He prayed for a more successful new year for all staff and Nigerians at large while enjoining everyone to be prepared for the tasks ahead by joining hands to tackle the menace of road traffic crashes with greater aggression in 2025.

The FRSC boss recalled some of the challenges encountered by the corps in the outgoing year such as fatal crashes, failure of some drivers to observe basic traffic rules and regulations as well as violence against personnel in parts of the country.

He restated his commitment to address such challenges in the new year, adding that ignoring traffic rules and regulations and penchant for militant behaviours towards the personnel of the corps would not be condoned in the new year.

“We have said it several times that road traffic crashes don’t just happen, they are caused and can be averted.

“That’s why we elevated our public enlightenment programmes this year to town hall meetings for conversation with cross sections of the people.

“We also strengthened the powers of the passengers to talk to drivers whenever they noticed something going wrong in any vehicles they are in.

“We have also enjoined our operatives to continue to show restraint in the face of provocations through our civil approach to the management of traffic,” the Corps Marshal said.

Mohammed expressed his management’s appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his morale and logistics support for the FRSC.

The FRSC boss also acknowledged the enabling environment created by the president that made the successes recorded by the corps in the outgoing year possible.

He however, appealed to the strategic stakeholders to continue to rally support for the FRSC, pointing out that road safety was a shared responsibility which no single organisation, individual or government agencies could tackle effectively alone.

The corps marshal assures Nigerians of the commitment of the FRSC to greater vigilance on the nation’s highways and wishes all greater prosperity and safer motoring experiences in 2025. (NAN)
