CBN Crashes Dollar Prices as New Rate Emerges

Nigerians holding United States dollars are increasingly looking to sell their foreign currency holdings amid fresh expectations that the dollar could lose further ground against the naira in the coming weeks.

The development has triggered renewed interest in the foreign exchange market, with some dollar holders reportedly seeking to convert their holdings into naira before a possible decline in the value of the greenback.

The latest sentiment follows forecasts by a currency expert that the dollar could weaken against the naira in the weeks ahead, raising concerns among speculators and individuals who have been holding dollars as a hedge against naira depreciation.

The prediction comes at a time when the Nigerian currency has shown periods of relative stability and recovery against the dollar.

Market watchers say expectations surrounding dollar supply, foreign exchange liquidity and Central Bank of Nigeria interventions remain important factors that could determine the direction of the naira.

Recent market assessments have also pointed to changing expectations around the US dollar globally. A Reuters poll published on September 2 found that most currency strategists expected little change or a decline in their dollar positions by the end of September, while more strategists saw a greater risk of dollar weakness over the following three months.

The development could put pressure on Nigerians who bought dollars at higher exchange rates, particularly those holding the currency purely for speculative purposes.

If the naira strengthens significantly, dollar holders who delay selling could see the naira value of their holdings decline.

However, analysts caution that exchange-rate forecasts remain subject to several unpredictable factors, including crude oil prices, foreign exchange inflows, demand for dollars, monetary policy and developments in the global economy.

In Nigeria, the naira’s performance has previously been affected by fluctuations in demand for foreign currency. Reuters reported in July that increased dollar purchases by fuel importers were putting pressure on the naira, highlighting the importance of foreign-exchange demand in determining the currency’s direction.

For now, the latest prediction has added another layer of uncertainty to the foreign exchange market, with dollar holders closely watching movements in both the official and parallel markets.

Whether the predicted decline materialises in the coming weeks remains to be seen, but the expectation alone could influence the behaviour of traders and individuals holding large dollar positions.

**As the naira-dollar battle continues, Nigerians holding dollars now face a crucial decision: sell before the expected fall or wait in the hope that the dollar stages another recovery.**
