The Osun State Government has officially removed Oba Gbenga Joseph Oloyede from his position as the Apetumodu of Ipetumodu, effective immediately. This decision stems from his conviction in the United States for fraud related to COVID-19.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Kolapo Alimi, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment. Alimi indicated that the decision followed thorough consultations, a legal review, and received approval from the State Executive Council.

This action aligns with the provisions set forth in the Osun State Chiefs Law, as amended, as well as other relevant regulations governing traditional institutions within the state.

“The decision was reached after due consultation, legal consideration and approval by the State Executive Council,” the statement read.

According to the state government, the monarch’s removal was necessitated by his conviction abroad.

“Oba Oloyede was convicted in the United States over offences related to COVID-19 fraud and is currently serving a prison sentence,” the statement added.

The Apetumodu was reportedly sentenced by a United States court in 2025.
