The Osun State Government has said most of the mega schools built by former governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola are useless and are rotting because of lack of maintenance.
It could be recalled that the administration of Aregbesola built 11 mega schools which cost N15 billion to address one of the challenges of the education sectors.
The government ahead of the planned education summit slated for next week during a press conference to unveiled the activities for the event disclosed that summit will address several problem of the education sector which ranges from policies, infrastructure, curriculum among others.
Responding to questions from newsmen, the Commissioner for Education, Dipo Eluwole lamented over the decay of infrastructure in Osun schools which is affecting performance of the pupils and responsible for poor rating of the state in southwest states.
According to him, “During Aregbe regime I was a lawmaker at Osun State House of Assembly, when he was doing his 60th birthday there was a special session for him in the house. They were eulogizing him when it got to my turn, I was called upon to talk and I spoke about the mega school. I said, Mr Governor, you are building gigantic houses you did not teach the children, don’t you know that the children that are not taught will sell…people at the gallery were clapping.
“The man doesn’t know what to say, that is the case in Iwo and so many places. There are gigantic buildings no pupils, no maintenance, they don’t think maintenance. I went to village school, it was made of mud and it is still there, before I was born the school was built by Baba Awolowo and the school is still there. So what about renovating the ones that are there put things that will make life easy for pupils. Many of the newly built schools by Oyinlola were destroyed. Look at the gigantic schools now, they are useless, but by the grace of God, we are going to sit down to look into those that are rotting and do something about it.”
He added that, “The regime built infrastructure without thinking of its maintenance. The contractors have gotten their money and gone now, what of the maintenance of those edifice ? it is a problem now. All those things, they don’t think about it but we are going to look for ways of making judicious use of those structures.”
Earlier, the Education summit chairman, Professor Oyesoji Aremu said that Governor Ademola Adeleke has promised the committee of implementing all the recommendations that will be made after the programme because politicians will be carried along during the summit.
