Why FG suspends Abuja-Kaduna train services, reason emerges

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the suspension of train operations along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor following a derailment incident that occurred on Sunday.
The Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed this decision during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasizing that services will remain suspended until thorough investigations are completed and safety can be guaranteed.
Mr. Opeifa stated that technical teams from the NRC, in collaboration with officials from the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and other pertinent agencies, are currently on-site to ascertain the cause of the derailment and to implement necessary preventive measures.
He addressed concerns regarding the maintenance of trains, asserting that the corporation has consistently maintained adherence to established safety standards.
Furthermore, Mr. Opeifa announced that refunds for all passengers affected by the disruption have been processed. He also reported that six passengers sustained minor injuries during the incident and have since received appropriate medical attention. However, he indicated that the total number of passengers present on board at the time of the derailment remains under verification.
In the meantime, the NSIB has formally initiated an investigation into the incident as authorities strive to restore safe and efficient rail services along this route.
