Nigerian Gov Shuts Down Schools Indefinitely (DETAILS)

The Plateau State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools over outbreak of diphtheria.

The government said the decision was meant to prevent the students from being infected by the disease.

The closure comes days after health officials confirmed the death of some residents of Jos North from suspected diphtheria complications.

The Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr Nicholas Baamlong, had on Tuesday disclosed that about 23 persons died from the disease, adding that the state government had intensified efforts to contain the spread of the highly infectious disease.

Baamlong said nine patients had been hospitalised at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, JUTH, and the Plateau Specialist Hospital.

In a statement on signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, on Saturday, the government said the directive takes effect from Monday, September 7, 2026 and will remain in force until further notice.

The commissioner explained that Governor Caleb Manaseh Mutfwang gave the order following the report of suspected diphtheria cases in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.

The government said schools that have already resumed must also shut down from Monday. Proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians were urged to ensure that pupils and students stay at home throughout the period to protect their safety and wellbeing.

“The Government appreciates the understanding and full cooperation of all stakeholders as it continues to take appropriate measures in the best interest of the people of Plateau State,” the commissioner said.

According to Daily Trust, the case sparked concern among parents and health workers, with fears that the highly contagious bacterial infection could spread in crowded classrooms.

Experts explain that Diphtheria causes severe breathing problems, heart failure and can be fatal if not treated early.
