EXPOSED: How money lending apps invading borrowers’ privacy to recover debts

As of January 2026, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has placed 45 loan applications on a blacklist in Nigeria.

These apps were deemed illegal for not adhering to the Digital Lending Regulations, which has resulted in increased risks for users, including harassment, misuse of personal data, and predatory lending practices.

Experts have highlighted that the delisted apps have engaged in unethical behaviors such as debt shaming, unauthorized access to user data, and the imposition of hidden charges.
