Dortmund compound Bayern woes, Leverkusen go 13 points clear

Bayern Munich lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, their first home “Der Klassiker” loss in a decade, allowing Bayer Leverkusen, who came back to win 2-1 over Hoffenheim, to go 13 points clear with seven games remaining.
Leverkusen’s victory put the onus on Bayern in Saturday’s late match, but the German champions lost at home with Dortmund scoring goals in each half through Munich-born Karim Adeyemi and defender Julian Ryerson.

Harry Kane had the ball in the net in the dying stages to give Bayern hope of a comeback, but the England captain’s goal was struck off for offside.

Dortmund’s first league win in Munich in 3,641 days, dating back to 2014 when Jurgen Klopp was in the dugout, took them three points clear of RB Leipzig and back into fourth place with the battle for the Champions League intensifying.

The win in Munich “took too long” said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic, telling Sky: “We had a bit of luck, but we worked hard for it.”

Earlier on Saturday, Leverkusen were 1-0 down at home heading into the final five minutes, with this season’s unbeaten record in serious danger a day after Xabi Alonso pledged to stay on as coach for another year.

But as they have done regularly this season, Leverkusen fought back late as Andrich levelled in the 88th minute before an injury-time Schick volley sealed another remarkable comeback win.

Leverkusen’s late win continued their record of victories in the dying moments this season. Alonso’s side have scored late to beat Augsburg, Leipzig, Stuttgart in the German Cup and Qarabag twice against in the Europa League.

“I was always optimistic,” Alonso told reporters. “We said at half-time that one goal is important. Everything can change in one moment.

“We have a winner’s mentality — we built that for ourselves this season.”

World best coach, Ancelotti quits Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti has decided to step down as Real Madrid’s head coach at the end of the current season, despite having a contract until 2026.

The Italian manager, who has enjoyed tremendous success during his second stint at the club, has made up his mind to close this chapter, even if the season concludes with titles and the club urges him to stay.

As reported by Radioestadio Noche on Onda Cero on Monday, Ancelotti is determined to move on next summer.

The coach, who renewed his contract in December 2023 amid speculation about his potential move to manage the Brazilian national team, has added significantly to his legacy at Real Madrid.

Under his guidance, the club has secured two La Liga titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies, a Copa del Rey, Super Cups of Spain and Europe, and a FIFA Club World Cup during this second tenure.

These recent triumphs only add to Ancelotti’s storied history with the club, including leading Real Madrid to their long-awaited “La Décima” Champions League title in Lisbon during his first tenure.

His contract renewal in late 2023 surprised many, as it was widely believed that his era at the club might be coming to an end, especially with the Brazilian Football Federation openly courting him and delaying their coaching decision in hopes of securing him.

Despite the successful renewal and a historic double in June 2024, Ancelotti is now certain about his decision to leave Madrid.

The report said, “Ancelotti is aware that continuing beyond each season, despite having a valid contract, does not solely depend on him. Nevertheless, he has decided to leave at the end of the current season, even if titles are won and the club insists he stays.

“’Even if the season ends with titles and the club insists on fulfilling the contract, I want to close my stage at Real Madrid this summer,’ sources close to the coach shared.”

Atalanta 2-3 Napoli: Lukaku seals thrilling battle at the top

Napoli took a massive step towards the Scudetto with a thrilling 3-2 victory away to Atalanta, as Matteo Politano, Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku ended La Dea’s run.

This was a top of the table showdown with four points separating them, as La Dea were unbeaten in 15, but had drawn their last three in a row and were missing suspended Sead Kolasinac, injured Odilon Kossounou, Juan Cuadrado and Gianluca Scamacca. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia completed his transfer to PSG yesterday, but David Neres has already taken over the role with Juan Jesus again filling in for injured Alessandro Buongiorno.

When these sides met in November, Atalanta ran out 3-0 winners at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona and Retegui scored late on.

The Capocannoniere made his return to the starting XI after injury and made an immediate impact too, smashing a ferocious left-foot finish into the near top corner from 10 yards after gathering with his back to goal.

Napoli drew level with their first real opportunity and a very similar strike, because David Neres saw his cross deflected into the path of Matteo Politano, who in an unusually central role took a first touch before smashing it into the far top corner with his left foot from a tight angle.

It was wide open and after Ademola Lookman drilled wide, the Partenopei turned it around. David Neres helped win the ball back at the corner flag and his delightful back-heel flick released Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa to pull back, Scott McTominay sweeping it first-time into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

Retegui fired over from a tricky angle on the Lazar Samardzic through ball, but Lookman created the equaliser out of nothing by flicking the ball around the sliding Giovanni Di Lorenzo, then taking on three players to thread his finish through a sea of legs.

Atalanta were pouring forward in the second half, Lookman’s slide-rule pass releasing Samardzic to test Alex Meret at the near post, then the goalkeeper making a one-handed save on Charles De Ketelaere’s header.

After riding out that storm, Napoli went back in front as Anguissa stood up a cross from the left for his second assist of the game, Lukaku’s glancing header into the far bottom corner when shrugging off Giorgio Scalvini.

Dele-Bashiru’s impact since joining Lazio in the summer has been profound. His dynamic performances, highlighted by two goals and two assists in four Europa League matches, have firmly established him as one of the club’s standout players.

In Serie A, the former Manchester City academy player has contributed two vital goals, including one in a crucial 1-1 draw against Atalanta.

Lazio’s sporting director, Angelo Fabiani, has made it clear the club is not eager to part with their talented midfielder.

Speaking on recent transfer speculation, Fabiani said:

“We were asked for Rovella, Dele-Bashiru, Nuno Tavares, Castellanos. Many are attractive on the market. We don’t have to dismantle the team, but complete it.”

Despite Lazio’s firm stance, Juventus remain undeterred, with unnamed Premier League clubs also monitoring Dele-Bashiru’s progress.

Núñez’s double at Brentford keeps Liverpool on title track

Núñez’s double at Brentford keeps Liverpool on title track

The Brentford fans ought to have known better. After all, Darwin Núñez had scored a fabulous goal against their team in the corresponding fixture here last season. Still, when Núñez entered as a 65th minute substitute, they were ready with their taunt, one that compared him unfavourably to his one-time Liverpool predecessor, Andy Carroll.

Núñez had travelled to London having scored only four times all season. The scrutiny burned. It was no kind of return for an £85m record signing. Arne Slot had insisted he would come good, that it was simply a matter of getting him into the right spaces and situations against deep-set opponents. How it would work out at the very end for Núñez and Liverpool.

The initial signs were not good – a misdirected header, a wild blast into the stands. Liverpool had turned the screw throughout, raining in shots on the Brentford goal. When the board went up to show four additional minutes, they had tried 35 – without success.

Finally, they got one to work and Núñez’s delight knew no bounds, the celebrations suitably wild. Another substitute, Harvey Elliott, had sparked the move up the inside right and when Trent Alexander-Arnold got the break of the ball, he crossed low and there was Núñez to sweep home.

There was more. It was another Elliott assist and another Núñez finish; this one lashed high into the net, utterly emphatic. “You’re just a shit Andy Carroll,” came the chant. This time, it was delivered with collective mischief from the travelling Liverpool supporters.
