Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has appeared to warn starlet Alejandro Garnacho that he must continue his current work rate while speaking in front of the Argentine’s family. The Red Devils have sealed a coup by tying down the teenage winger to a new contract, amid interest from several other Champions League teams.

Garnacho has put pen to paper on a long-term deal. United have released footage of the 18-year-old celebrating the moment with Ten Hag and his family.

However, during a lengthy speech in front of the Garnachos, the Dutchman appeared to warn the academy graduate that he needs to continue working hard. It comes after Garnacho was made to wait for his debut over concerns about his attitude, with both Ten Hag and vice-captain Bruno Fernandes publicly warning the attacker over his conduct earlier this season.

“He’s improving and he’s improved a lot. This is why we are now here, he deserves this new contract. It is deserved by his performances. He has fought his way into the team,” Ten Hag said in the speech.

“It was a huge step and he did magnificently. Now, I hope – and I think – this new contract is an inspiration and motivation to do even better.

“It is a big step, you have to do some celebrations with your family and the ones who are in your heart. This club needs players who can do incredible things. We want to win, but we also want to win in a certain way.

“Playing is the most important. And then we go on to win in a certain way because we are playing in the Theatre of Dreams. This club has to win trophies. You want to win trophies.

“A new contract is great. But in the end, in a career you want to collect trophies. You want to look back and say, ‘I won the Premier League, I won the Champions League, I was at the World Cup’.”
