The Lagos State Government has issued a public health alert over the spread of Lassa fever, rolling out a statewide awareness and prevention campaign as infections continue to rise across Nigeria.

Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, revealed that the country is experiencing one of its most severe outbreaks in recent years, with over 660 confirmed cases and 167 deaths recorded between January and mid-March 2026. The disease has affected 22 states and 93 local government areas, a trend he described as a serious national concern requiring urgent and coordinated action.

He also raised alarm over the impact on healthcare workers, noting that at least 38 have been infected, with three doctors losing their lives. According to him, such developments highlight the need for stricter infection control measures, heightened vigilance, and faster response systems.

Lassa fever is a highly contagious disease mainly transmitted from rodents through contaminated food or surfaces, but it can also spread from person to person. In severe cases, it may lead to complications such as internal bleeding.

Although Lagos is not classified as an endemic state, its large population and constant movement of people increase the risk of rapid transmission. Abayomi warned that many infected individuals may show mild or no symptoms yet remain capable of spreading the virus, creating a silent threat in densely populated areas.

He further noted that the disease is no longer strictly seasonal, with evidence pointing to year-round transmission. He likened its risk level to other serious infections such as Ebola and Marburg virus disease, emphasizing the need for sustained public awareness and preventive action.
