Obi–Kwankwaso Ticket for 2027 Elections Could Emerge

Fresh political permutations ahead of the 2027 general elections have placed former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, at the centre of emerging realignments, with strong indications that he may contest on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Although no formal declaration has been made, credible political insiders say discussions are ongoing within opposition circles that could see Obi emerge as the ADC’s presidential flagbearer, with backing from key northern power brokers.

Sources familiar with the talks claim that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is playing a strategic role behind the scenes, subtly paving the way for Obi’s emergence as the ADC candidate. Under the proposed arrangement, Obi would reportedly be paired with a northern running mate, with Atiku expected to have significant influence over the choice.

“Everything is still at the consultation stage, but Peter Obi is clearly a major factor in the 2027 equation,” a senior political source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Papers.

“There is a growing consensus that his Obidient movement, combined with northern political support, gives him a strong edge.”

There are also speculations that former Kano State governor and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, could emerge as Obi’s running mate, should the alliance crystalise.

Political observers say such a ticket would attempt to balance southern popularity with northern grassroots strength.

Multiple reports suggest that influential stakeholders and elder statesmen across the country have quietly expressed support for an Obi-led ADC ticket, viewing him as a unifying figure capable of mobilising youth voters and disenchanted blocs ahead of 2027.

Fueling the speculation further, Obi recently made comments that many interpret as a renewed signal of his presidential ambition. While campaigning for the ADC candidate during the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the former Anambra State governor linked local political engagement to a broader national vision.

Addressing supporters, Obi reportedly stressed the importance of building momentum from the grassroots, adding that meaningful national change must begin with winning elections at all levels — remarks that allies say align with his 2027 aspirations.

Though ADC leadership has yet to officially comment on the speculation, the growing chatter underscores intensifying behind-the-scenes manoeuvres as opposition forces weigh coalition options to challenge the ruling party in the next presidential race.

As consultations deepen, political watchers say the coming months will be critical in determining whether Peter Obi formally declares for 2027 — and whether the ADC emerges as the platform for his next presidential bid.
