Controversy as lawmaker empowers constituency with guns for self defence

In light of the relentless assaults perpetrated by bandits across several communities in Katsina State, a local lawmaker, Abubakar Muhammad, has shed light on his controversial decision to arm his constituents.

Representing the Funtua Constituency in the Katsina State House of Assembly, Muhammad revealed that he took this measure to empower the people in his region to defend themselves against the menacing threats posed by the banditry that has plagued their lives.

His actions stem from a deep concern for the safety and security of his community, as residents have increasingly felt the need to protect themselves in the wake of escalating violence.

Speaking during an interview with RFI Muhammad popularly known as Total said he was concerned for his people after he realised they were using stones and sticks to defend themselves from bandits.

According to the lawmaker, the bandits specialise in killing and raping women and girls across communities in his constituency.

He also stated that they kidnap residents and demand a huge amounts of money as ransom.

Following the purchase of arms for six different wards in his constituency, the lawmaker said they were also engaged in training sessions on the handling of arms.

“I was troubled when I heard residents use stones to confront bandits; that courage moved me, but it also broke me. It was then I decided to help them with arms.

“They told me that if they had guns, they could have reduced the level of destruction, Their plea stayed with me,” Muhammad said.

He further stated that the arms are placed under the custody of the Community Watch Corps (CWC) to avoid misuse by residents.

“My intention is not to militarise the people; it is to give them a fighting chance until security personnel arrive”, he reiterated.
