Court grants Dele Farotimi N30 million bail, bars him from speaking to journalists

According to Vanguard, Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has denied sending anyone to plead with Afe Babalola (SAN), who filed a defamation lawsuit against him.

The case stems from allegations contained in Farotimi’s book, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.

Farotimi, currently standing trial in Ekiti State, addressed the issue through his lawyer, Tope Temokun, during a recent prison visit. The clarification comes after reports emerged that the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, visited Afe Babalola, allegedly to seek an out-of-court settlement for Farotimi.

Temokun shared details of his discussion with Farotimi during the Sunday edition of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande. He stated, “I visited Mr. Dele Farotimi in a correctional service in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, yesterday afternoon. The events of recent days—particularly Peter Obi’s visit to Aare Afe Babalola and his subsequent visit to Farotimi—have created some confusion.”

Temokun said he asked Farotimi directly about the alleged appeal for clemency. “He (Farotimi) told me categorically that if anyone believes he sent somebody to beg Afe Babalola, he would be deeply disappointed. He emphasized that his principles and philosophy have been consistent over time. He made it clear that the truth remains his only weapon in this struggle.”

The activist also reportedly expressed his disappointment in anyone, including his legal team, who might believe such claims. Temokun added, “Farotimi’s position is unambiguous: he is standing firm on his stance and has no intention of seeking a compromise.”

The controversy began when Babalola accused Farotimi of defamation due to statements in his book, which critiques Nigeria’s justice system. Despite the legal battle, Farotimi appears resolute, maintaining his commitment to justice and truth.

Peter Obi’s visit to Afe Babalola has sparked speculation about whether it was related to the case. However, neither Obi nor Babalola has made any public statements confirming the purpose of the meeting.

Farotimi remains in high spirits despite his legal challenges, according to Temokun. “He is determined to see this case through and prove his innocence,”the lawyer concluded.
