Nigerians groan as cost of condoms increases by 200 percent

Published

on

Some residents of Lagos have raised concerns over the increasing cost of condoms, saying it will lead to unsafe sex and unintended pregnancies among citizens.

The residents spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

NAN reports that there are different types and brands of condoms, and the best are often determined by their quality, durability, level of comfort and protection they offer.

Some condom brands include Durex, Fiesta, Kiss, Rough Rider and Gold Circle, among others.

Checks at some pharmacies showed that prices of condoms had increased by 50 to 200 per cent when compared to their prices last year.

The residents said that access to affordable contraceptives was critical in ensuring the health of both partners, protection from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and planning the desired pregnancy.

A banker, Felix Atuche, said the increasing price of condoms had made him resort to withdrawal methods, hoping it wouldn’t lead to pregnancy.

“We got married two months ago, and my wife and I are currently undertaking our master’s degree, so pregnancy has to wait about two years. I usually use the Durex Fetherlite Elite condom because it heightens the feelings between partners, just like skin-to-skin.

“I used to buy the pack for N1,900, but now it goes for N2,500 to N3,500, depending on the pharmacy I buy from. The cost is getting unaffordable because of the many packs I need.

I resorted to the withdrawal method, but my wife has been avoiding sex with me because she’s scared of getting pregnant,” he said.

Similarly, Monisola Ajayi, a businesswoman, said that she prioritised her sexual health by ensuring that she used female condoms during sexual intercourse.

She said: “A few years ago, I contracted STIs from my husband. I got treated and forgave him, but the incident left a scar on my heart, so I always ensured I used a condom to protect myself. Female condoms are available but more expensive than male condoms. Ten pieces of Fc2 vaginal condom go for over N4,200 now, before it was around N2,000”.

“If I don’t have a condom, then no show for Oga except he buys it for me. The hardship in the country is negatively affecting our sexual health,” she said.

Also, a youth corps member, Celestine Adesola, said the rising cost of condoms exposed many youths to unsafe sex, which could increase sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

She said: “Valentine’s celebration is this week, and some parents would be shocked if they knew the unimaginable and risky practices their teens and youths want to indulge in for fun.

“I would advise that enlightenment should be intensified among teens and youths. Also, non-governmental organisations should increase the distribution of free condoms to protect the health of youths,” Mrs Adesola said.

Commenting, Michael Achoji, a pharmacist, said the increase in condom prices was impacted by rising inflation, cost of production, and foreign exchange rates.

Mr Achoji appealed to the Federal Government to prioritise sexual and reproductive health issues through sustained interventions that would ensure access to and affordability of contraceptives.

“Muslims Are Not Slaves” – Pastor Can’t Appoint Oyo Chief Imam, MURIC Sends Strong Warning To Alaafin

Published

on

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has rejected the claim by the Alaafin of Oyo, Akeem Owoade, that he has the exclusive right to appoint the Chief Imam of Oyo town.

MURIC’s founder and executive director, Ishaq Akintola, said on Wednesday that no law gives the monarch such power.

His words: “The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade claimed yesterday that he had the exclusive right to appoint the chief imam of Oyo town.

Oyo Chieftaincy Gazette: Pressure Mounts On Ladoja To Accept Beaded Crown As Monarch

“The claim was contained in a statement issued by the Alaafin’s director of media and publicity, Bode Durojaiye, on Monday, September 15, 2025.

“We reject this statement. It is false, baseless and without any legal backing. What the Alaafin called his exclusive right is a baseless privilege now being abused by traditional rulers in Yorubaland. Alaafin is being economical with the truth.”

Akintola challenged the monarch to produce a legal instrument backing his claim, describing it as “illogical, irrational and laughable”.

“If he has the power to appoint the chief imam, does he also have the power to appoint the bishop of Oyo?” he asked.

He further stated: “Now, if he has no power to appoint the bishop, he cannot claim the power to appoint the chief imam. If he is relying on tradition, there is a difference between tradition and what the law says.

“By the way, what kind of tradition enslaves Muslims but gives Christians freedom. We reject a tradition that puts Muslims in chains. Muslims are not slaves.”

The MURIC director said Nigeria is a democracy and not a monarchy, warning the Alaafin to “respect himself and know his limits so that he can be adequately respected”.

He added that past practices cannot serve as justification.

“The tradition in the past was to trek to Makkah on foot. That has been abandoned. The incumbent Alaafin should stop clinging to a comatose practice,” he said.

Akintola argued that Owoade, being a pastor, has “no moral right to dictate who should lead the Muslims in Oyo”.

He said the Muslim community of Oyo should consult the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) before presenting a candidate for the role, stressing that the Alaafin’s blessing is “not mandatory”.

“To the Alaafin, Kabiyesi, your imperial majesty, you are the king over the whole of Oyo. You are king over the Muslims, the Christians and the traditionalists.

“Each group chooses its own leader. No law gives you exclusive right to choose the chief imam. Otherwise, show us evidence that you picked the Bishop. If you cannot pick the Bishop, how can you pick the imam? Stop impugning our dignity. Respect begets respect,” MURIC said.

Recent reports from an online news platform suggested that Wike had traveled to the United Kingdom for medical treatment, with allegations indicating a diagnosis of congestive heart failure.

This revelation has stirred concern among his supporters and the general public alike.

In response to these unsettling rumors, Prophet Julius Okonkwo, a well-known cleric and the presiding pastor of Kingdom Seeker Ministries based in the United States, offered reassurance about Wike’s health.

He cautioned that the troubling news circulating about the minister was politically motivated, aimed at instilling fear among Nigerians.

Further emphasizing Wike’s importance to the current administration, the prophet labeled him as “the best minister” in the government and warned that there are adversaries both within and outside his circle.
