FACT-CHECK: Real Truth About Trending N5,000 Note

Published

on

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked a viral claim suggesting the introduction of a new ₦5,000 banknote.

A widely circulated image on social media, allegedly showing a redesigned currency note featuring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has triggered widespread reactions and speculation among Nigerians.

The image, which gained traction on platforms such as X, WhatsApp, and Facebook, was shared by users claiming it was an official release from the apex bank.

However, checks show that the claim is false.

In response to the growing speculation, the CBN issued a disclaimer via its official X handle, stating: “This content is fake. Let the public be guided.”

The bank made it clear that it has not introduced any ₦5,000 denomination, nor announced plans to do so.

Although the CBN did not provide additional details, its clarification aims to curb misinformation and reassure the public.

The apex bank further urged Nigerians to rely solely on information from its verified communication channels and avoid spreading unverified claims.

This is not the first time such rumours have surfaced. In 2025, the CBN similarly dismissed reports alleging the introduction of ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 banknotes, describing them as false and misleading.
