Atiku, Obi, Others Plan New Party as INEC Tightens Grip on ADC

A fresh wave of political realignment may be underway following the removal of key leadership names of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal.
Multiple party sources told our correspondent that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and several top figures within the ADC are now considering a mass defection to a new political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development comes days after the Independent National Electoral Commission reportedly updated its official records, effectively delisting certain individuals previously recognized as party leaders. The move has triggered confusion within the ADC and intensified an already brewing leadership crisis.
Growing Tensions Within ADC
Insiders say the situation has deepened mistrust among party stakeholders, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s structure and legitimacy. Some leaders loyal to Atiku are said to have interpreted the portal changes as a political setback that could weaken their standing within the party.
“There is serious concern that the current structure no longer guarantees fair participation,” a senior ADC member said under anonymity. “Consultations are ongoing, and all options — including moving to a new platform — are on the table.”
Talks of a New Political Platform
Sources familiar with the discussions revealed that exploratory talks are ongoing among opposition figures to form or adopt a new party capable of challenging the ruling establishment in 2027. While details remain sketchy, the proposed coalition is expected to draw members from multiple parties and political blocs.
Analysts say the move, if confirmed, could reshape Nigeria’s opposition landscape, especially if it brings together influential northern and southern political actors under a single umbrella.
INEC Yet to Clarify Fully
As of the time of filing this report, INEC has not issued a detailed public explanation regarding the changes observed on its portal. However, officials have repeatedly maintained that party leadership recognition is strictly based on valid court orders and official submissions.
What This Means for 2027
The uncertainty within the ADC raises fresh questions about the stability of opposition parties ahead of the next election cycle. If Atiku and his allies eventually exit, it could significantly weaken the party while accelerating the formation of a broader opposition coalition.
Political observers warn that continued internal disputes and legal battles among parties may ultimately influence candidate eligibility and election outcomes if not resolved early.
