BREAKING: Atiku to Dump Obi as Running Mate; Two Reasons Emerge

Fresh political tension is emerging within the opposition camp as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is reportedly considering another candidate as his preferred running mate, a development that could weaken Peter Obi’s position ahead of the 2027 general election.

Multiple sources within the coalition talks revealed that Atiku is exploring other options outside the Labour Party standard-bearer, amid concerns over political structure, regional balance, and internal party dynamics.

According to insiders, Atiku’s camp is said to be weighing candidates from the North-Central and South-South zones in a bid to strengthen electoral appeal and widen support across key voting blocs.

This development has sparked unease among Obi’s supporters, who had expected a possible alliance that would see the former Anambra State governor retain a central role in any opposition ticket.

A senior party source disclosed that negotiations between both camps have slowed in recent weeks, following disagreements over power-sharing arrangements, campaign strategy, and control of party machinery.

“Talks are still ongoing, but Atiku is keeping his options open. Nothing has been concluded,” the source said.

Political analysts believe Atiku’s move reflects a broader struggle for dominance within the opposition, as leading figures position themselves ahead of primaries and coalition agreements.

Meanwhile, allies of Peter Obi have downplayed the reports, insisting that discussions are continuing and that Obi remains a major force within the opposition movement.

“Obi has massive grassroots support and cannot be sidelined easily,” a Labour Party chieftain said. “Any serious coalition must recognize his influence.”

As 2027 approaches, the unfolding drama is expected to reshape alliances and redefine political calculations within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.

Observers warn that prolonged internal disputes could weaken the chances of unseating the ruling party if unity is not achieved in time.

According to a top source within the coalition party, Atiku is likely to prioritize regional balance when choosing a running mate. Since he is from the North-East, picking another strong candidate from the South-East—like Peter Obi—may not deliver the widest electoral spread.

Strategists may instead advise Atiku to consider candidates from regions where he needs to boost support, such as the South-West, North-Central, or South-South.

Another factor is party organization and grassroots control. Obi’s political base is strongly driven by popular support and youth movements, but his party structures in some regions remain limited.

Atiku may prefer a running mate with deep-rooted party networks, strong governors’ backing, and established political machinery that can help mobilize voters nationwide.
