Two Ministers May Resign as Tension Grows Over Tinubu’s 2027 Running Mate

Unconfirmed reports suggest that at least two ministers in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet may resign amid rising tension over speculation surrounding the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The reports follow rumours that Vice President Kashim Shettima could be dropped as Tinubu’s running mate, a move that has reportedly unsettled senior government officials and party leaders. While no official confirmation has been made, the speculation has triggered internal debate over regional and religious balancing, particularly calls for a northern Christian vice-presidential candidate.
Sources familiar with the matter say the rumours have deepened divisions within the administration, with concerns that sidelining Shettima could cost the APC significant political support in key northern states.
A serving minister recently warned that removing the vice president from the ticket could weaken the party’s electoral standing in the North, where Shettima retains considerable political influence.
A cabinet source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters that continued speculation could prompt the resignation of two or more ministers in protest against what they described as unfair treatment of the vice president.
“If this issue continues to linger and appears likely to happen, some ministers may choose to step aside,” the source said, adding that any resignations would be timed to allow those involved to plan their next political moves.
The source also noted that while Shettima’s removal remains uncertain, pressure from some political blocs seeking a religiously balanced ticket has intensified internal discussions.
The Presidency and APC leadership have yet to comment on the reports.
