Defection Shakes Kano: Governor Joins APC Amid Rising Tension

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is set to officially rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, January 26, 2026, after resigning from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) last Friday.

On the same day, he is expected to launch the APC e-registration exercise in Kano State.

A statement released on Sunday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, highlighted that the APC is a familiar political platform for Governor Yusuf.

The statement noted that he first joined the party in 2014, when he won the APC primary election for the Kano Central Senatorial seat, which he eventually conceded to Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

According to the statement, Yusuf’s return to the APC followed years of political engagement across different platforms, including his most recent stint in the NNPP.

It noted that prevailing realities of governance, national cohesion and development informed the decision to rejoin what he described as a structured platform for progressive governance.

Governor Yusuf said returning to the APC would strengthen cooperation with the Federal Government, accelerate infrastructural development, enhance security coordination and improve service delivery across Kano State.

He added that the move would also help consolidate political stability and unity in the state.
