Defection: Kwankwaso Makes Fresh Demand Ahead 2027 Polls

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party, stated that he would consider allying with another political party in preparation for the 2027 general elections only if he is offered either the presidential or vice-presidential candidacy.
This announcement was made during a Kwankwasiyya gathering held at his residence on Miller Road in Kano, where he spoke about the current political realignments occurring ahead of the upcoming elections.
“At the national level, we are looking for a political party to align with,” he said. “But it must be a party that will offer me either the presidential ticket or the vice-presidential slot.”
His comments come amid speculations over a possible defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the NNPP to the All Progressives Congress.
Reacting to the speculation, Kwankwaso dismissed the reports, describing them as unrealistic.
“That is nothing but a dream,” he said.
The former governor of Kano State has voiced criticism regarding the political approach under President Bola Tinubu. He highlighted that having a significant number of governors within the All Progressives Congress (APC) does not automatically ensure electoral success.
He emphasized that factors such as credibility, popular support, and performance are crucial determinants of election outcomes.
Reports from Arewa PUNCH indicate that Kwankwaso’s statements have sparked increased political discourse about potential alliances and realignments in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
