‘Stop lieing, you can’t do single-term’ - El-Rufai criticises Obi over campaign bargains

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has rubbished the one-term presidency bargains made by Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi, the two presidential hopefuls of the coalition party, African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In his statement during a Channels Television interview on Sunday night, El-Rufai asked how possible such promises are.

“Now, on the question of people coming out and saying, ‘I will do one term,’ I don’t think anyone believes that. I don’t think it is right. You should not constitutionally give up what is yours,” El-Rufai said.

The former governor argued that four years in office is insufficient for any administration to deliver meaningful change. He pointed out that both Obi and Amaechi, having served as state governors, should be aware of the time it takes to implement reforms.

“As someone that has been governor for eight years, and Amaechi and Peter Obi have both been governors, they know the time it takes to make meaningful change in government. Four years is not enough. So I want to appeal to everyone to stop making these commitments,” he added.

El-Rufai stressed that such pledges are not credible, insisting that nobody believes them.
