2027: Fresh Crisis Hits Coalition as ADC Suspends National Vice Chairman

Fresh reports have emerged that a powerful bloc within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) considering to zone 2027 presidency to the south.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Nigeria is navigating a complex political landscape as it prepares for the 2027 elections, particularly with its zoning strategy for selecting candidates, especially for the presidential ticket.

Zoning, a practice in Nigerian politics to rotate key political positions across geopolitical zones for equitable representation, is critical for the ADC.

According to party insiders who spoke with Nigerian Tribune, Jonathan is said to be giving serious thought to the proposal. However, he remains conflicted over his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party, which brought him to national prominence.

A source close to both Jonathan and the ADC confirmed on Friday that the former president is being positioned as a top contender by influential figures within the party.

The source said, “Former President Goodluck Jonathan is worried that certain persons with strong links to the Villa may still be in control of the PDP and may mess him up if he seeks the ticket of that party.”

The source added that the ADC leadership believes Jonathan’s candidacy could tilt the scales in its favour in 2027.

However, Jonathan is reportedly hesitant about running on a platform that would pitch him against the Labour Party’s Peter Obi, whom he believes enjoyed massive Igbo support during his 2015 campaign.

The source said, “His only issue with the ADC is that he does not want to contest against Peter Obi because he believes that the Igbo people supported him in 2015 even more than his own Ijaw people.”

The source further explained that the ADC was ready to restructure its zoning arrangement to accommodate Jonathan.

“If he chooses our party (ADC), we will zone the presidency to the South. If he does not come to us, we will have no option than to go to the North because politics is about numbers and winning,” the source said.
