Coalition: Fresh rejection for Atiku as party takes bold decision

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is currently confronting significant challenges as he approaches his final opportunity to secure the presidency of Nigeria in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

The former member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has recently announced his resignation from the party after forming a coalition with other political stakeholders to unseat the incumbent president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in the next electoral cycle.

One of  Atiku’s motivations for forming coalition stems from a notable lack of support from PDP governors and existing battle with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who have expressed their opposition to his backing of President Tinubu. Additionally, several party members have defected to the ruling party, further complicating Atiku’s political aspirations.

In addition to facing rejection within the PDP, multiple politicians and former aides have advised him to reconsider his ambitions of becoming the nation’s leader, asserting that he lacks divine endorsement for such a role since 1999.

In a new development of rejection, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in South-West region has distanced itself from coalition of opposition political parties.

It said no part of the party in Southwest region has joined coalition with any party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A coalition of opposition parties adopted African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 general elections.

This decision was arrived at a meeting which attracted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Presidential candidate of Labour Party Peter Obi; former Senate President David Mark; former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola; former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi among others.

Speaking in Ibadan during the Southwest stakeholders meeting of the party, the Chairman of chairmen in the 36 states of the federation and FCT, Abuja, Hon. Femi Olaniyi, otherwise known as ‘Ferrari’ maintained that nobody can take any decision on behalf of the party concerning joining the coalition except directive from the party National Working Committee (NWC).

He noted that SDP in Southwest region still await NWC of the party to come up with its own stand and everything regarding the coalition.Olaniyi said: “As it’s stand now, there is nothing like coalition in SDP.”

He allayed the fear of party members on various challenges confronting them in their respective states, saying “The NWC has promised to guide us and assist each state with membership cards, register and every other thing at the appropriate time.”

Olaniyi maintained that there is unity among leaders and all stakeholders in the region as they always speak with one voice for the progress of the party.

“In 2027, we will rescue Nigeria from the current administration, bring a formidable government and show all Nigerians a true and real democracy.”

Olaniyi, who also doubles as Lagos chairman of the party, said: “We discussed about the challenges, progress and the coalition at our meeting.

“In the six states of Ondo, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti and Oyo, respectively. We have been asking series of questions regarding this so called coalition, and we just called our people to intimate our resolves not to be part of any coalition at the moment.”

Lawmaker representing Ise-Orun Constituency in the Ekiti House of Assembly under SDP, Hon. Babatunde Omotayo, said: “We are here to resolve some issues. We resolved issues and dialogued for the development of our party- SDP.

“The most important among what we discussed was how we can remain one and speak with one voice to move the party forward in the region. So, SDP as a political party doesn’t have plan to join the so called coalition.”

The same claim about Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), appear here.

Wike, governor of Rivers state from 2015 to 2023, is widely considered a strong ally of President Bola Tinubu.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member supported Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the 2023 poll. Tinubu eventually won the 2023 presidential election.

Wike was the leader of the G5, a group of then-PDP governors who were aggrieved with the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and the PDP national leadership at the time.

After his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Tinubu appointed Wike as the minister of the FCT, Abuja, apparently as a reward for his support to the president during the election.

Lately, users put up posts on social media claiming that Wike suffered a heart failure and is in grave danger of dying. But how true is this? We probed..

Wike ‘away from duty’

We discovered that the story about Wike’s alleged severe illness was published by Nigerian blog, Sahara Reporters. The media outlet said sources privy to the minister’s health status informed it that Wike has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and is currently under medical management in the UK. Apart from that, no such articles from any credible news outlet.

Also, we found that it has been a while since Wike appeared at public events. Wike was last seen at the flag off of the emergency rehabilitation and dualisation of the Karu Interchange, Customs Clinic Junction road, Abuja, on Wednesday, September 3.

The video and photographs can be seen below:

He has been represented at two public events since that time, fuelling rumours that he might be out of the country for medical reasons. On Thursday, September 4, chief of staff Chidi Amadi stood in for Wike at the flag off the distribution of fertilisers at 50 percent subsidised rates to farmers across the six area councils of the FCT.

Similarly, on Thursday, September 11, Mariya Mahmud Bunkure, the minister of state for the FCT, represented Wike at the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Nigeria (APSON’s) 24th annual general meeting (AGM) and scientific conference in Abuja. Vanguard noted Mariya filling in for Wike at the event.

Wike’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, who is vocal on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter), and is often swift to quash certain reports related to his principal, has yet to issue a statement to debunk or confirm the development.
