2027: Atiku’s exit not new, we’re expecting his return – PDP

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar came under some mocking yesterday from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following his Wednesday exit from the party, his third since 2007.
Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Umar Damagum, said Atiku’s latest departure did not come to the party as a surprise.
He said the former VP would be back in the party as he has always done.
Atiku’s resignation, according to him, is consistent with his history of switching political affiliations.
“This is not the first time; we’re expecting him back,” he said, flanked by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.
Damagum said PDP remained strong and unbothered by Atiku’s resignation.
Also speaking on Atiku’s exit from the PDP, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulahi, said it (exit) has no consequence for the party.
Atiku, according to him, “is a person who is given to driving and pursuing his ambition with every vehicle, and there’s nothing wrong with that in the face of the law.
“But we as a party are not deterred; we are not losing any sleep over Atiku Abubakar.”
Continuing, Abdulahi, who spoke on Arise Television, said: “When he said the other previous instances were not as justified as this present one, it leaves much to be desired about his commitment to the party. But suffice to say PDP is moving on; we are beginning to get our house together.
“If only you know the number of persons that are calling to congratulate the PDP on his exit, because there were a lot of persons who, all along, wanted to identify with the PDP but they were apprehensive of his involvement for the simple reason that as long as he remained within the party all the time, he would get the ticket, and it doesn’t matter to him if the zoning favours the north.
“A lot of persons are now calling across the strata, saying that now you people seem to be getting it right, and by the grace of God, you will cross the bridge for the first time since those of them who you know kept constituting a clog in the wheel of the progress for the party are now giving way.
“So, we bid him farewell. Let him go and try somewhere else. I only pray he will not fail in his promise by coming back after the so-called coalition hits the rocks, which is going to be the case ultimately.”
Abdulahi said PDP would not have found itself in the crisis it currently battles with if Atiku had managed the post-2022 PDP presidential primary situation carefully.
He added: “All that he is obsessed with is to contest for the presidency of Nigeria at all cost. And when a person begins to think that he is indispensable in a movement, then it leaves much to be desired about his sincerity in that mission.
“By now one would be expecting Atiku to have called it (presidential bid) off; to have raised some other successors to say three decades after he started, he’s not still aspiring for the presidency.
“It mustn’t be you; if you can’t see anybody all along to back for it, it’s very unfortunate. So, PDP is not losing any sleep over his exit.”
Abdulahi said Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, remains a member of the PDP as he hasn’t come out to denounce his membership.
He spoke of PDP’s plan to utilise an ongoing internal process to ensure reconciliation and also deal with any member who perpetuates division within it.
He said that with the resolution of the dispute over the authentic national secretary, the party was now poised to put the past behind it and move boldly forward ahead of the 2027 general election.
“PDP is still there and we are priding ourselves with 10 performing governors who have carved a niche for their states and who have stood out in the crowd relative to what obtains in the APC-governed states.
“Our governors have done so well and it doesn’t matter if we are receiving a lot of pressure from the ruling party APC, for them to join the few elements that were cowed into joining the ruling party.
“PDP is not intimidated; we’ll truly come out triumphant in 2027.
“We came out of a storm, we suffered some problems but we are now navigating the waters safely.”
Atiku, in his resignation letter, cited irreconcilable differences for his ‘heartbreaking’ action.
He claimed that the party has diverged from “the foundational principles we stood for.”
Following his first exit from the PDP in 2007, he contested for the presidency on the platform of the Action Congress (AC).
He returned to the PDP only to dump it for the second time in 2014 to seek the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He lost the ticket to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, and four years later found his way back to the PDP.
He has his eyes on the presidential ticket of the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election.
The same ticket is being sought by the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in 2023, Mr.Peter Obi and former Transportation Minister, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

VIDEO: Prophet Iginla Shares Scary Prophecies On Tinubu, Wike’s Health

Popular Nigerian cleric and founder of Champions Royal Assembly, Prophet Joshua Iginla, has called on citizens to intensify their prayers for the nation’s leaders, particularly focusing on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
In a recent prophetic message delivered to his congregation, Iginla emphasized the urgent need to address the health of both leaders. …You can watch Iginla’s video from 0:01 to 0:26 minutes
He stated that spiritual support through prayer is essential for enabling them to effectively fulfill their responsibilities in guiding the country.
In his words, “We need to be praying for our leaders. I have talked about two important leaders that needs our prayers in this country. I see our president and the FCT minister need prayer for their health. They should pay more attention to their health.”
The prophecy comes amid renewed conversations about the well-being of public office holders in Nigeria. Earlier this year, speculation swirled around Nyesom Wike’s health, prompting widespread media reports. The former Rivers State governor, however, swiftly dismissed the rumours, insisting he was in good condition and capable of handling his ministerial responsibilities.
For President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, concerns about his health have also been a recurring subject of public debate, both during his election campaign and after his inauguration. Although the presidency has repeatedly assured Nigerians of his fitness to govern, the topic continues to surface in political discussions.

Did Tinubu’s Ally Wike Suffer Heart Failure in UK, Fighting for His Life? Here is What We Know; Wike’s Spokesperson Shares Update

A report by Sahara Reporters, which has been widely shared on internet, claims that Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
A post circulating on social media has sparked new speculation about the health status of Minister Wike.
This post has been viewed by over 12,000 people and makes the claim regarding his health condition: “Breaking News. Wike Suffers Heart Failure in UK. Presently Battling With His Life.” …Click link for full details
Wike, serving as the minister of the FCT since 2023, is a key ally of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Legit reports that while Nigerian hospitals battle with inadequate equipment and funding, most of the country’s politicians routinely travel for medical treatment in the United Kingdom (UK).
However, checks by Legit.ng indicate that no other reputable platforms have the report
Lere Olayinka, senior special assistant on public communication and social media to Nyesom Wike, on Sunday, September 14, disclosed that his principal will be on a popular political show on Thursday, September 18, 2025.
The online news platform said sources privy to the minister’s health status informed it that Wike has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and is currently under medical management in the UK. Apart from that, no such articles from any credible news outlet.
The same claim about Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), appear here.
Wike, governor of Rivers state from 2015 to 2023, is widely considered a strong ally of President Bola Tinubu.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member supported Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the 2023 poll. Tinubu eventually won the 2023 presidential election.
Wike was the leader of the G5, a group of then-PDP governors who were aggrieved with the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and the PDP national leadership at the time.
After his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Tinubu appointed Wike as the minister of the FCT, Abuja, apparently as a reward for his support to the president during the election.
Lately, users put up posts on social media claiming that Wike suffered a heart failure and is in grave danger of dying. But how true is this? We probed..
Wike ‘away from duty’
We discovered that the story about Wike’s alleged severe illness was published by Nigerian blog, Sahara Reporters. The media outlet said sources privy to the minister’s health status informed it that Wike has been diagnosed with congestive heart failure and is currently under medical management in the UK. Apart from that, no such articles from any credible news outlet.
Also, we found that it has been a while since Wike appeared at public events. Wike was last seen at the flag off of the emergency rehabilitation and dualisation of the Karu Interchange, Customs Clinic Junction road, Abuja, on Wednesday, September 3.
The video and photographs can be seen below:
He has been represented at two public events since that time, fuelling rumours that he might be out of the country for medical reasons. On Thursday, September 4, chief of staff Chidi Amadi stood in for Wike at the flag off the distribution of fertilisers at 50 percent subsidised rates to farmers across the six area councils of the FCT.
Similarly, on Thursday, September 11, Mariya Mahmud Bunkure, the minister of state for the FCT, represented Wike at the Association of Paediatric Surgeons of Nigeria (APSON’s) 24th annual general meeting (AGM) and scientific conference in Abuja. Vanguard noted Mariya filling in for Wike at the event.
Wike’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, who is vocal on social media, especially on X (formerly Twitter), and is often swift to quash certain reports related to his principal, has yet to issue a statement to debunk or confirm the development.

Fubara’s Return: ‘This Is Very Dangerous’ – Anxiety Mounts Over Emergency Lift

In normal times, the imminent return of a suspended governor after six months in political exile has raised tension among political stakeholders in the state.
Gov. Siminalayi Fubara is due back in office on September 18 at the end of emergency rule, the mood, according to feelers from the state, is anything but jubilant, as reported by BusinessHallmark.
What should have been a restoration of democracy has, instead, deepened anxiety. Most residents, analysts say, see Gov. Fubara’s comeback not as a rebirth of hope, but as the reinstallation of a figurehead. In their telling, President Bola Tinubu and Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, have used the emergency period to capture Rivers State’s political machinery, leaving Fubara naked, stripped of real authority.
The real winners, they argue, are in Abuja. Tinubu, they say, has secured a crucial oil-rich state in his column ahead of his 2027 re-election bid. Wike, his ally-turned-power broker, retains a firm grip on Rivers while enjoying relevance in the federal cabinet. The casualties? Fubara himself, the people of Rivers, and Nigeria’s already fragile democracy.
When President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in March and suspended Fubara, citing security concerns, many lawyers and political observers called the move unconstitutional. The National Assembly, nonetheless, waved the objections aside, approving it with a voice vote.
Yet, on the ground in Rivers, the sense was very different. The state was calm when the emergency was announced, critics insisted, and if anything, the imposition of direct rule destabilised the atmosphere.
Chetam Nwala, a Port Harcourt based lawyer and activist, argued that the measure was “long overdue,” but had little to do with public safety.
“It was basically a state capture, not to bring back security,” Nwala said. “The governor is coming back to do the president’s bidding, not that of Rivers people.”
Nwala told News Central, “I am happy that we are returning to constitutional democracy, unlike what we have had in the state, but I am not excited because I know we are returning back to Egypt. Everything that was done in Rivers State was simply done for Tinubu’s 2027 election. It was basically a state capture, not to bring back security to Rivers State. The president has successfully hoodwinked the governor and the governor is coming back to do his bidding, not the bidding of the people of Rivers State.
“I believe that the governor should be independent to be able to lead Rivers people based on the interest of the people, and not based on the interest of anybody. But we know that once the governor returns it will be about pushing the interest of the president for 2027, because that is exactly what the president wants. It is very unfortunate that the president has destroyed the economy of Rivers State and has given us a bad reputation before the international community just because of his 2027 ambition.”
Theophilus Alaye, president of the Ijaw Youth Council, warned that the precedent set is even more dangerous than the politics behind it. “When the emergency was declared, the state was largely calm. It is the emergency that threw us into chaos,” Alaye said. “Today it is Rivers. Tomorrow it could be Lagos or Kano. A serving president can now suspend governors, who don’t support his re-election. That is how democracy collapses.”
He emphasised that, “This is a very dangerous precedent that the president has set, and the Supreme Court has refused to rule on it. What they have done in Rivers State may not stay a Rivers issue alone. I keep saying that on that the president is going to succeed in suspending five to 10 governors that are not doing his bidding.
“That is why we were expecting the Supreme Court to look into the decision. The PDP governors filled a case to determine whether the president has the power to suspend the governor of a state, but the Supreme Court sat on that petition.”
Chief Peter Ameh, national secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), was even blunter: “The governor has surrendered to federal might. There’s nothing he’s coming to do other than sign checks and pay salaries. Unfortunately, citizens have been so pauperised that they cannot rise against this lawlessness.”
The Ibas interlude
For six months, Rivers has been administered not by its elected government, but by a sole administrator: Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ekwe Ibas. His tenure has been marked by bold, often controversial actions.
From inaugurating a new Pensions Board to appointing governing councils for four state-owned universities, and the conduct of a local government election termed illegal by lawyers, many say Ibas acted like a long-term governor, rather than a caretaker. His claim to have saved N5 billion through a payroll verification exercise that uncovered 12,000 “ghost workers” was loudly trumpeted. But civil service unions quickly countered that genuine staff had been wrongly struck off and accused him of seeking to ingratiate himself with the presidency to justify prolonging emergency rule.
A rights activist called the exercise “a ploy to discredit Governor Fubara.” Online, anger boiled over. Jahmal of Port Harcourt (@Big_Sinudo) accused Ibas of attempting to deduct N1 billion from each of the state’s 23 local government areas. “Was the assignment to deduct N23 billion?” he asked in a post on X.
To many, Ibas’ conduct underlined what they had suspected all along, that the Rivers emergency was less about restoring order than about consolidating political control.
