Sanwo-Olu leads strategic delegation to Portugal, eyes investments for state development

In a move to attract skilled and reliable foreign investors, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led a high-level delegation on a two-day working visit to Portugal, aiming to build partnerships that support Lagos State’s THEMES+ development agenda.
The governor, via his official X handle, shared that the trip focused on discussions with the Mota-Engil Consortium, a prominent European construction firm, underscoring Lagos’ commitment to securing top-tier partners for transformative infrastructure projects.
During the visit, the delegation toured several of Mota-Engil’s flagship projects, including the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the facility as a model of world-class infrastructure, offering valuable lessons for Lagos as it plans the development of the Lekki-Epe International Airport.
The new airport is expected to alleviate congestion at Murtala Mohammed International Airport and enhance connectivity in the rapidly expanding Lekki-Epe corridor, a major economic hub.
The statement reads: “In our drive to attract skilled, trustworthy, and capable foreign investors to support the THEMES+ development agenda, I led a delegation on a two-day working visit to Portugal.
“Our primary focus was the Mota-Engil Consortium, one of the largest construction companies in Europe.
“During our visit, we toured the Porto International Airport—Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport—constructed by Mota-Engil, which was truly impressive.
“We also visited their waste management facilities and real estate operations, which provided us with a wealth of knowledge and insight. Mota-Engil has an impressive track record of delivering large infrastructure projects in Africa and this speaks volumes about their capabilities.
“We are focused on potential collaborations for the proposed Lekki-Epe International Airport. This strategic initiative is aimed at alleviating congestion at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport and improving infrastructure along the Lekki-Epe corridor.”
