The Katsina State government has paid part of the examination fees for its indigent students taking this year’s West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, WASSCE and that of the National Examination Council (NECO).

Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, the state governor, disclosed this when he received the Head of the Nigerian National Office of West Africa Examination Council (WAEC), Amos Dangut and his delegation, on a courtesy call at the Government House, Katsina.

Radda who advocated for a strict punishment for students engaged in examination malpractice during WAEC examinations, maintained that there should be consequences for the perpetrators of the examinations to serve as deterrent to others.

“It is unfortunate that some parents also aid their wards in cheating during examinations. We now have students who are lazy, and care less about studying ahead of their examinations. Hence, they resort to engaging in examination malpractice, with the support of some parents who just want their children to acquire educational certificates, without sound knowledge.”

The governor, however, assured that necessary mechanisms will be put in place to ensure that cases of examination fraud in the state during the forthcoming WAEC examinations are minimised.

“We are also going to organize mock examinations for the students, to prepare them for the WAEC and NECO examinations,” Radda added.
