PDP’s Mahmoud Kallamu Wins Mayo Belwa Constituency in Adamawa Assembly By-Election

In a closely contested House of Assembly by-election in the Mayo Belwa constituency of Adamawa State, Mahmoud Musa Kallamu, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emerged victorious, clinching a significant win over his closest rival.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially declared Kallamu as the winner, having garnered a total of 1,306 votes. His opponent, Ibrahim Musa Italiya of the All Progressives Congress (APC), trailed behind with 874 votes.

 

The INEC Returning Officer, Professor Mohammed Baba Ardo of Modibbo Adama University Yola, announced that Kallamu secured victories in six out of the seven polling units in the constituency. The election saw a total of 5,024 registered voters, with 2,252 accredited votes. Out of these, 2,192 were deemed valid, while 06 votes were rejected, resulting in a total of 2,252 votes cast.

 

Professor Ardo also provided a comparative analysis with the 2023 general election results for the constituency. In that election, there were 20,824 valid votes and 367 rejected votes, with a total of 21,191 votes cast. During the 2023 general election, the APC secured 7,912 votes, while the PDP obtained 7,840 votes, with a slim margin of 72 votes.

 

In contrast, the by-election exercise witnessed a surge in registered voters, totaling 56,999, with 24,610 accredited votes and 23,443 total votes cast. Kallamu emerged as the clear winner, obtaining a total of 9,146 votes, while the APC candidate secured 8,786 votes, both in the general and by-election combined.

 

With this victory, Mahmoud Musa Kallamu of the PDP is set to represent the Mayo Belwa constituency in the Adamawa State House of Assembly, marking a significant political development in the region.

­The outcome of this by-election underscores the dynamic political landscape in Adamawa State and the growing influence of the Peoples Democratic Party in the region. As Kallamu assumes office, stakeholders and constituents will be closely watching to see how he fulfills his electoral promises and addresses the pressing issues facing Mayo Belwa constituency.
