Betta Edu: 10 things to know about humanitarian affairs minister

President Bola Tinubu on Monday, January 8, suspended Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, over an alleged N585m scandal within the ministry.

The controversy unfolded with a document, signed by Edu and sent to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, where she requested the funds to be transferred to the personal account of Oniyelu Bridget Mojisola.

Here are ten things to know about the suspended minister:

1. She was born in October 27, 1986

2. Betta hails from Abi Local government area in Cross River State

3. She served as national women leader of All Progressive Congress (APC).

4. She was Cross River State Commissioner for Health until her resignation in 2022

5. She was also National Chairman of the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum

6. In 2015, Edu became the youngest person to be appointed Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Cross River State Benedict Ayade on Community and Primary Healthcare

7. In 2020, she became chairman of the Cross River State COVID-19 Taskforce.

8. In August 2023, Betta was sworn in as minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation and the All progressives congress replaced her as National women leader

9. In the last 48 hours, the media has been awash with reports of an alleged N585 million scandal by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu.

10. She was suspended from her ministerial position on January 8, 2024.
