Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has returned to Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, following an overseas trip reportedly related to consultations with President Bola Tinubu.

This comes at a time of heightened political tension in the state, particularly due to renewed efforts to impeach him.

Governor Fubara made his first public appearance since his return on Sunday, participating in a church service at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt, which was held to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

He was joined by his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, and several senior government officials.

The governor’s appearance follows recent developments in the Rivers State House of Assembly, which initiated new impeachment proceedings against him last Thursday, marking the third such attempt to remove him from office within a span of less than three years.

While the state government has not provided specific details regarding the governor’s trip abroad, sources indicate that he traveled via private jet with plans to meet with President Tinubu in France amid the ongoing impeachment crisis.

The latest political developments are unfolding against the backdrop of a long-running rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

Since assuming office, Fubara has steadily fallen out with Wike, his former political benefactor, leading to a bitter power struggle that has split the state political structure and repeatedly paralysed governance.

The Rivers Assembly, largely loyal to Wike, has accused the governor of gross misconduct, allegations that Fubara and his administration have so far declined to address publicly.

Previous impeachment attempts were stalled after federal intervention and court actions, but the renewed push has reignited fears of prolonged instability in the oil-rich state.

Sunday’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day service honoured Nigerian servicemen and women who lost their lives in defence of the nation’s unity and sovereignty, with prayers offered for fallen heroes and those still in active service.

Despite the mounting political pressure and the unresolved feud with Wike, Fubara’s appearance alongside his deputy signalled an effort to project calm, even as uncertainty continues to surround his political future.

Fubara has broken his silence for the first time since the Rivers State House of Assembly began an impeachment process against him.

Fubara declared that he will not “shout or complain” about the issues in the state because God is with him.

Fubara made this known on Sunday during an interdenominational church service organised to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

The service took place at St Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt, Rivers state capital.

Fubara jokingly told the congregants that the church service might be the last public function for him and his deputy.

The Rivers governor asked the people of the state to be calm, that peace will return to Rivers.

“Let me say it here, where we were making the New Year dinner, I said that, ‘dogs bark when they don’t understand’.

“A lot of you don’t understand that the reason why I don’t shout or complain is that I know that I have what is supreme, that is God.

“I want everyone to be relaxed. What is important is peace for this dear state. We will get it by the special name of God.”
