Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, was recently observed wearing a cap emblazoned with the emblem of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) while actively campaigning for the party’s candidate, Justina Azuka, in the forthcoming Onitsha North State Constituency by-election, scheduled for Saturday.

Mrs. Azuka, who is the widow of the late Labour Party lawmaker for Onitsha North, has entered the electoral race under the ADC platform following the tragic demise of her husband last December.

The deceased legislator was reportedly abducted on December 24, 2024, along Ugwunaobankpa Road in Inland Town, Onitsha, while returning home for the Christmas holiday. His body was discovered weeks later, on February 6, 2025, at the Second Niger Bridge.

In a statement disseminated through his social media channels, Obi expressed his support for Mrs. Azuka. He stated:

“I stand with Mrs. Azuka for the Onitsha North 1 Constituency. I recently visited Mrs. Justina Azuka, who has endured the profound and harrowing loss of her husband, Hon. Justice Azuka, at the hands of kidnappers.

In the face of such unimaginable grief, Mrs. Azuka has chosen to embrace public service by contesting for the Onitsha North Constituency 1 seat in the House of Assembly, with the intent to complete the remaining 13 months of her late husband’s tenure. She is a young mother of three, with her eldest child being only seven years old, and the others aged five and three.

“I have consistently asserted that leadership devoid of compassion is ineffectual. Authentic leadership must harmonize competence with humanity. Mrs. Azuka holds an HND in Public Administration, qualifying her as a competent individual who embodies strength, resilience, and a commitment to serve.

“I urge all conscientious citizens, both domestically and abroad, to lend their support to her candidacy. Supporting her represents not only an investment in adept representation but also a collective act of solidarity aimed at alleviating the burdens of her loss.

“She has my unequivocal support, and I encourage all of us to unite to ensure the election of this capable and dedicated individual on Saturday, August 16, 2025. In doing so, we convey a definitive message that in the evolving landscape of Nigeria, we will embody compassion, care for one another in times of adversity, and uphold justice alongside effective leadership.”

Peter Obi is among a coalition of opposition politicians who have joined forces under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 election. This alliance has committed to reinforcing the party’s organizational framework and affirming the principle that collective interests must supersede the influence of any individual, irrespective of their official capacity.
